In retrospect, this album has plenty to laugh at. With everything that has come since it's release, most listeners will offer snide comments about the dated sound and ultimately unsuccessful attempts at new ideas. In 1972, however, when this came out, this was a pretty daring and comparatively novel concept, offering proto-hairband and metal elements in their sound. Lack of focus is certainly something that will get brought out in trial as well. But I'm not so sure that is a bad thing here. Their sound can be described as including a few heavy and/or hard rock elements too, as well as some progressive influences. I can detect Deep Purple in the mix, but not one ounce of Yes, as some others have posited. The high-pitched, somewhat wailing vocals were not at all common at that time either, but have since become the norm through the 80's. All in all, this one is decidedly lacking in enough real meat to sink your teeth into, though on the better tracks, they surely show their potential. A shame they weren't able to develop that direction a little farther.

Effectivement l'album est bien produit, Capricorn Records oblige, le son est bon, les musiciens aussi, mais voilà. Il manque le truc qui en fait un excellent album. C'est un bon album.
Le groupe se cherche un peu dans le style entre prog, glam ou ? C'est un peu inclassable si ce n'est dans un rock générique.
Le synthé est parfois un peu trop présent mais ca se laisse bien écouter.
Je ne suis pas super emballé finalement mais suis content de l'avoir dans ma collection. Pour sa pochette ?

PublishedEh. it's decent. It starts and finishes great. but the boring stuff in the middle was disappointing. A1, B4, B5, and B6 are good songs with It's So Nice To Be Stoned a classic novelty of the era.
PublishedThe reviewer that called this a cross between Yes and Deep Purple just about hit the nail on the head. Toss in just a soupcon of Allman Brothers (They were signed to Capricorn Records after all) and you've nailed it. Excellent debut by an excellent and forgotten band.

These guys must've gotten the crap beaten out of em on more than one occasion. Had to take some guts to be from the Southern US and sport that silly make-up as they did on this front cover back in late 72. Still ya gotta give em credit. They sort of deliver the goods. It is a rather watered down take on Deep Purple & early Yes, with a dash of pop smarts, but done with real panache.
Frankly, Kansas is closer to what these guys achieve & they hadn't even made one of their crappy records yet. But to top it off it's really well produced by Johnny Sandlin of Capricorn. Phil Walden had been making big $$ off the Allmans by then so he must've had a wild hair the day he signed these guys. Give him credit tho, if they'd had a couple of better songs they might've beaten Kansas & Styx to the punch. Now that would've been something.
