I was surprised when I stumbled upon a witch hat near my location during a walk in the park. It was a stunning and authentic-looking hat, with its dark and mysterious color. The hat seemed out of place, as if it had been dropped or forgotten by a magical being. Its presence in such an ordinary setting intrigued me. As I picked up the hat, I noticed the intricate details and craftsmanship that had been put into its creation. The fabric was smooth and it had delicate lace trimmings.

Here's an interview by Chris Bond '81 with Tom King ’58, who is believed to be the last in a long line of students who lived in Hathorh Hall and rang the Hathorn bell by hand up to 19 times every class day.

TB Since you ve only appeared at sports games so far, do you think that you ll also consider coming to other school events, such as the Club and Resource Fair. JP When I first got the position, Joshua Motenko emailed me about the games going on; some home games for rugby, dodgeball, volleyball and soccer at COCC at the time.

The fabric was smooth and it had delicate lace trimmings. I could almost imagine it being worn by a witch during a mystical ceremony or a Halloween celebration. Curiosity consumed me as I wondered who the owner of this hat could be and why it was left behind.

From Bobby the Bobcat to the Gov, incoming mascot ready to ‘write my story’ at Austin Peay

There’s a new Gov mascot in town! AJ Crowder, also known as Bobby the Bobcat from Greenbrier High School, recently accepted an APSU Gov mascot scholarship that is the first of its kind.

“When I was awarded the scholarship, it was a very satisfying moment,” Crowder said. “I knew that my hard work during the last six years was going to pay off for college.

Crowder has high hopes and goals for the Gov and spreading that Peay spirit. National cheer competitions and an extensive wardrobe for the Gov are in the works.

“I am so excited to spread love and positive messages across the entire university,” Crowder said. “It’s all about the people and bringing them joy and happiness. Let’s Go Peay!”

Bobby the Bobcat

For six years, Crowder was better known as Bobby the Bobcat. Crowder was always known for his school spirit and was often seen decked out in school spirit at school functions. One day, Crowder was called into the principal’s office and was given a giant box. In the box was the Bobby the Bobcat costume.

“I took that idea, and I ran with it,” Crowder said. “I got some ideas from YouTube and learned what to do and what not to do. I went to not only school events, but also community events. I just wanted to create a positive impact on our community.”

The pandemic couldn’t stop Bobby or Crowder. During a time when joy was hard to find, Crowder dressed up as Bobby and would attend birthday parties. Here, he still managed to spread joy, even at six feet apart.

Crowder’s work as Bobby earned him many accolades including the 2019 Varsity Brands School Spirit Award, the 2020 Main Street Preps Person of the Year Award and the 2021 Mascot Training Camp Champion and most recently the 2022 Best Mascot Fan Favorite in Middle Tennessee.

After Austin Peay, Crowder’s goal is to become a professional mascot for a sports organization or team.

“This opportunity would allow me to impact a much larger group of people tremendously,” Crowder said.

Crowder’s love for bringing people together has had a huge impact on his career as a mascot. First and foremost, he wants to spread happiness one dance and handshake at a time.

“That’s why I am super excited about starting here at Austin Peay as the Gov. When I was looking at colleges, I knew I wanted to make an impact like I did in Greenbrier,” Crowder said. “I saw Austin Peay as my book of blank pages and knew I could write my story at APSU.”

Wherl of emotions

Was it accidental or intentional? Perhaps a playful witch had decided to leave a clue of their presence for a curious person like me to find. I started asking people around if they had seen anyone wearing a witch hat recently, but no one seemed to have any leads. It was as if the hat had appeared out of thin air. I considered taking it home with me, but a part of me felt that it should remain where it was found. It felt like an object charged with enigmatic energy, one that would lose its essence if taken out of its natural habitat. I left the hat where I found it, hoping that its true owner would come back for it. The experience left me with a sense of wonder and awe, reminding me that magic and mystery can be found even in the most unexpected places. The witch hat near my location served as a reminder to embrace curiosity and to always keep an eye out for the enchanting wonders that reside in our everyday lives..
