How to use Magic Eraser in Google Photos

Google's Magic Eraser is an impressive feature that many smartphone users would love to have at their disposal. This feature allows users to remove any unwanted object or person from their photos instantly. This feature was initially exclusive to Google Pixel smartphones, but now it is available to users of other smartphones, either Android or iPhone , but for a fee.

What is Magic Eraser
Magic Eraser is a feature that can significantly enhance the user experience of any smartphone. It was launched in 2021 and has quickly become one of the most talked-about features in mobile photography. This feature is designed to detect any objects, people, or other elements that may be out of place in a photo. Once identified, it recommends removing them, and with a simple tap, the feature erases the selected area from the photo.

One of the most exciting things about Magic Eraser is that it is not limited to automatic detection. If the feature misses something or the user wants to remove something that was not detected, they can manually select the area to be erased. Magic Eraser then removes the selected area and even predicts what the scene would look like without the removed object. This feature also smooths over the scene, making it appear as if the object was never there.

Another exciting feature of Magic Eraser is the "Camouflage" feature. This feature changes the colour of particular objects in the photo to make them blend in with the rest of the scene. Users can achieve a more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing picture with this feature.

Previously, Magic Eraser was only available on Google Pixel smartphones. However, Google has now made it available to users of other smartphones through their subscription service, Google One.

How to use Magic Eraser on any smartphone

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Select a photo with clear subjects and solid textures.
  3. Tap on "Edit" at the bottom of the screen and choose "Magic Eraser" from the suggested tools or from the "Tools" category.
  4. Now, the app will scan the image and highlight suggested subjects to erase. You can tap on them individually or choose "Erase all." You can also manually highlight what you want to erase by brushing over the subject.
  5. To use "Camouflage," select the option instead of "Erase." This feature adjusts the colouring of the subject to match the surroundings.

Users can access this feature in Google Photos by subscribing to Google One. Along with Magic Eraser, Google One also offers other features such as additional cloud storage, Portrait Light and Portrait Blur editing tools in Google Photos.

While a fee is required to use this feature, Google offers a free trial of Google One starting in March. This free trial is available to anyone who has not subscribed in the past.

People will find the tool in the Google Photos app when editing any photo. One just needs to go to the Tools tab to launch Magic Eraser. Though, the app will automatically detect distractions like photobombers. Users can also circle an object to remove unnecessary objects or anything else from a frame.

Google Magic Eraser – But It’s Not Free

Removing background objects and photobombs in your favourite photos has always been both fun and very popular. But finding the software to carry out the task without being gouged is not so easy. Google recently introduced Magic Eraser to the Photos app and I only became aware of it through an enticing notification, so I gave it a whirl. It’s very good at what it does, no doubt with the help of AI, but it’s not free and many of the features are only available for mobile use.

In order to use Magic Eraser and many other tools in the Photo app, you’ll need to sign up for Google One at $2 per month, which also gives you more storage space.

Passed down through generations, the talisman is revered as a potent symbol of luck, prosperity, and warding off evil spirits. The design of the talisman showcases a harmonious blend of geometrical patterns, vibrant colors, and intricate calligraphy. Each element carries symbolic meaning and is believed to hold specific power.

Other Eraser Tools Available

One of the most heavily advertised programs for erasing unwanted objects and backgrounds is inPixio Photo Studio which gives you a limited free trial with the full version costing an expensive $60 per year. I remember trying it once after being bombarded by their Facebook posts, but it was fiddly and didn’t live up to my expectations because once the offending object had been removed, what was left in its place was a mess.

To be honest, there are hundreds of other programs of this type, but you have to keep an eye out for snake oil sales and dodgy software, and frankly, I haven’t got time to test them all.

Here’s a selection of eraser/object removal apps from Microsoft Store which shows just how many of these programs/apps are available. I can only assume that many will be freemium.
