200+ girl names from the Rainbow Magic Fairies books

I was going through some of the old books in my basement and came across one of my favorite series when I was little: The Rainbow Magic Fairies by Daisy Meadows. As I was going through my collection, I noticed that I was missing a few books of a particular fairy “theme” and got curious about what their names were, so I turned to Google. To my surprise, there were 264 books in total with 255 unique girl names used in the titles. In addition, there were quite a few localization changes as the books were originally published in the U.K. and later brought to the U.S. market. I thought it would be fun to share all 255 fairy names with you guys, as well as a list of all of the localization changes at the bottom. If you are interested in seeing which theme each fairy belongs to and when their books were/are going to be published, the wiki page where I got the names from has them all in order.

There were three types of localization changes from the U.K. to the U.S: fairies who had their name changed, fairies who had their title changed, and fairies who had both their name and title changed. In addition, there were 9 fairy books that were only published in the U.S and 10 fairies (Aisha, Alyssa, Anna, Brianna, Cara, Charlotte Chelsea, Jennifer, Lisa and Rita) who had their name repeated twice: once for a U.K. book and once for a U.S. book whose theme is entirely unrelated to its U.K. counterpart.

The title changes made a lot of sense to me, as some of the titles included words that would have one meaning to those who know British English but another meaning to those who know American English (for example, “holiday” means “vacation” in British English but “special occasion” in American English; therefore, “Summer the Holiday Fairy” became “Joy the Summer Vacation Fairy”).

However, the publishers also decided to change 20 or so fairy names without changing their title. These name changes began in the very first series when Saffron the Yellow Fairy (whose book was published on May 29th, 2003) became Sunny the Yellow Fairy when the book was published by Scholastic in the US on July 1st, 2005.

The name “Saffron” gained increasing popularity in the U.K. during the 1990s due to a character in the popular British comedy Absolutely Fabulous bearing the name ( even ranking at #133 in the top U.K. girl names of 2000 ), but has never even entered the top 1000 U.S. girl names .

In contrast, Sunny has remained in the top 1000 U.S. girl names since the 1970s, peaking at #547 in 1975 and, while on the decline ever since, has seen a recent surge in popularity between 2017 and 2018 when it jumped from #984 to #871. Thus, it makes sense that they would rename the U.S. version of the Yellow Fairy “Sunny” given the association the sun has with the color yellow and the relative popularity of the name in the U.S. compared to Saffron.

I imagine the same line of thinking went into some of the other fairy name changes (i.e. let’s change a name that’s not as popular in the U.S. as it is in the U.K. so that readers are more familiar with it and there’s a greater chance a girl will have a fairy named after her and want to buy the book) but I could be wrong. There’s also the 10 fairies whose names were used twice, so some of the name changes might be to use up a name that hasn’t been released in the U.S. yet. If anyone has any more insight into the name changes between the U.K. and the U.S. books based on historical name popularity or personal experience I would love to know.

If you’re still reading this far, I hope you enjoyed this!

Reviews for "Coming Soon: Red Magic 8s Pro Release Date Teased"

    1. Andrew - 2/5 - I was really disappointed with the Red Magic 8s Pro Kick Off Date. The phone's performance was subpar and laggy, and I experienced constant freezing and crashes. The battery life was also disappointing, as it drained quickly even with minimal usage. Additionally, the camera quality was not up to par, producing blurry and washed-out images. Overall, I regretted purchasing this phone and would not recommend it.
    2. Emily - 1/5 - I had high expectations for the Red Magic 8s Pro Kick Off Date, but it turned out to be a complete letdown. The phone consistently overheated, making it uncomfortable and frustrating to use. The user interface was cluttered and confusing, and the phone came pre-loaded with unnecessary bloatware. The audio quality was also disappointing, with poor sound output and occasional distortion. I regretted my purchase and would not recommend this phone.
    3. David - 2.5/5 - The Red Magic 8s Pro Kick Off Date had its fair share of issues. First, the fingerprint scanner was unreliable and often failed to recognize my fingerprint. The phone's software was filled with glitches and bugs, causing apps to crash frequently. The design of the phone was also disappointing, with a cheap and plasticky feel. While the phone had some decent gaming performance, the overall experience fell short of my expectations. I wouldn't recommend it unless all you care about is gaming.
