The unassuming alternative single is paired with a black-and-white video with an old-timey introduction and cue cards for dialogue; the plot is also a throwback, with a hero, a damsel in distress and a mustachioed villain standing in the way of true love. With the help of the power of levitation, Good Chris (Christophe) defeats Dastardly Chris (Claude), and the magician’s assistant becomes intertwined with the “beautiful young magicienne.”

“Magic” precedes Coldplay’s sixth studio album, “Ghost Stories,” due out on May 19 through Parlophone/Atlantic Records. Martin has yet to speak about the album since posting an announcement last month that he and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow had decided to separate.

Magic

It's very simple, it's about a break up: "And I just got broken, broken into two" and the singer can't get over the other person: "And I can't get over, can't get over you" and the singer doesn't want anyone else: "I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you" and he believes someday they'll be together again: "And if you were to ask me after all that we've been through "Still believe in magic?" Well yes, I do. Of course I do"

raulmron March 22, 2014 Link

I think the last verse is saying that after all the turmoil that they've been through he still believes in the "magic" that is love as a whole.

I don't necessarily believe he means they'll get back together.

Shooszon April 06, 2014

Disagree. I see "And I just got broken, broken into two" and his request to his lover "cut me into two" as him thinking he's found his "better half" or "person who completes him."

Obviously, or as they've called it "a conscious decoupling"

Bendubzon April 23, 2014

Its so sad I hope they get back I don't like break ups. :(

nod Why haven't more people figured this out? Poor heartbroken Chris Martin - can you blame him? It's Gwyneth freaking Paltrow.

aaronw23on July 26, 2014 +4 My Interpretation

It is about a couple who keep coming together and falling apart. The guy keep swaying from breaking into two to being next to you(her Significant other). And he doesn't understand why this happens, why every time they fight, then why does he still want her only and then why they always get together again and then again fall apart. Hence, he calls this whole sequence of events as magic. With her magic she can make her or break her. It is like he never existed to something like he is her life. And the guy questions sometimes his love, sometimes he thinks maybe because they fight so much, maybe aren't meant for each other, and then when they do get together, he feels she is one he wants. Hence, even though after all that he is been through, he loves her and believes such love can only be magical and hence he believes in magic.

I love this song. I was not a fan of midnight, and was extremely disappointed, but magic gave me a lot of faith that the album would actually be quite good. As for the meaning. Its simply taking about how in love he is with this other person, and he's both broken over the fact that its not mutual, but he's also in wonder with the beauty of their relationship and how he feels when he's around her.

I think this song describes the feeling of falling in love and the moments you share with that person. "Call it magic or call it true"

Agree with Sophia, very very obviously about Martin's separation. Really beautiful track though, my heart goes out to him because there's obviously still feelings there and so much emotion in this track. The last verse brings tears to my eyes.

To me this song is about a relationship and being so in love/infatuated with your significant other. Both of them have this chemistry or "magic" that is unexplainable, and you can't really explain it until you experience it.

Its simple, he’s talking about the love he had for a woman after a breakup, it’s heartbreaking and beautiful. He calls it as magic, an indescribable phenomena, something that people talk about but never really believe until they’ve witnessed it and it stays with you, this thing you can never really explain, I think its captivating to describe his love in this way, and still he claims even after they’ve broken up he still believes. Its beautiful.
