When Zack returns home, he gives Alice clean water from Dr. Forbes’s house and food from the store. He goes into the cellar to see his mother, but she is gone. Upstairs, Nathan and Cyrus, both hideously disfigured, attacks him and Alice. Breaking away from Nathan, Zack knocks Cyrus unconscious with a baseball bat and hides Alice in a closet. When Dr. Forbes arrives, Nathan knocks him unconscious and drags him into an empty room. Zack comes downstairs, and as Nathan attacks him, Carl Willis arrives and stabs the crazed father with a pitchfork. Smoke billows up through the floorboards as the house begins to collapse. Zack and Willis run upstairs to save Alice. As Willis carries Alice to his car, Zack goes into the cellar and discovers that his mother has turned into a gelatinous blob. Willis pulls him to safety moments before the house collapses and sinks into the ground. Five months later, 29 January 1987, Carl Willis, having been captured by police after suffering a “nervous attack,” watches on television as Professor George Link assures the public that the Crane farm has been sealed off and decontaminated, and there is nothing to worry about. However, at the farm, there are strange lights, trees topple, and molten fluid rises to flood the ground.

Some months later, a heavily-bandaged Willis lies in a hospital bed, having become infected more slowly because he only drank a small amount of the farm's water. He is watching a news report on how authorities are promising that the blight from the farm will be eradicated.
