Philanthropy

Gopinath Muthukad is the founder of Academy of Magical Sciences, which aims to promote the art of magic as a subject of education and its benefits to influence people’s lives.

One of Muthukad’s notable philanthropic initiatives is the ‘Magic Planet‘ project, which involves setting up an eco-friendly campus to promote magic and its use to boost creativity, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence among children. Apart from a major role as a tourist destination in Kerala, the Magic Planet, with its lush green and fresh environment provides opportunities for artists to perform. Admission to the Magic Planet is free. Magic Planet is accessible to a wide range of people, including those from underprivileged backgrounds who may not have the financial means to attend other similar attractions. Consequently, this venture becomes a great example of how philanthropy can be used to promote education, creativity, and sustainability, while also providing opportunities for artists and entertainers to showcase their skills and talents.

Muthukad’s experience with differently abled people has taught him the importance of inclusivity and empathy. He has witnessed firsthand the challenges that people with disabilities face in their daily lives, and the struggles that their families go through to support them. This has moved him deeply and has motivated him to use his skills as a magician to make a positive impact on society. Muthukad has been inspired by the lives of differently abled people and their families, and this has led him to withdraw from commercial public stage performances and dedicate himself to philanthropy. He started the Different Art Centre for the upliftment of the differently abled community.

He has been actively involved in various social causes, such as promoting education, providing support to differently abled people, street magicians and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.

“Every day, I wake up with the dream to do something innovative that ensures a care for the living nature and humanity. I deliberately induced this very habit into my passion i.e., magic at every stage of my life. This indeed has given the power and enthusiasm to change and influences the lives of others. Now it’s my vision and aim, to transform the young generation especially children community into humble individuals who can contribute positively towards the society through proper love and adequate care.

I am glad to have spearheaded the execution of the world’s first ever art centre exclusively for differently-abled children – Different Art Centre. The centre has changed the life of many and is sure to change many more in future. Our dream project, the Universal Empowerment Centre has also taken shape now.

I have decided to dedicate the rest of my life for the welfare of the differently abled.”

We make a living by what we get.
We make a life by what we give.

Started his magical voyage at a very young age with more than 8000 stage performances in various countries since 1974 and winning global accolades, he advocated seeing magic as a subject of education and one that can be used for betterment of society. He got influenced by witnessing the lives of differently abled persons and their families. This made him withdraw from commercial public stage performances and dedicate himself to the philanthropic cause. Wonder world of magic in Thiruvananthapuram

A snap of the Magic Planet, a magical theme park coming up at the Kinfra Film and Video Park at Kazhakuttam in the city.

Magic has kept generations in its thrall, with even a simple sleight of hand bringing out the curious child in every individual. Magic is mystery fine-tuned into an art form. Portals to that world of mystery and charm will open in the capital city when ‘Magic Planet’, a novel experiment in magical theme park, comes alive at the Kinfra Film and Video Park at Kazhakuttam on October 31.

Conceived and executed by magician Gopinath Muthukad, ‘Magic Planet’ will open with the three-day ‘International Magic Summit 2014’ to be attended by magicians across the globe.

The theme park will have a magic museum, aptly named ‘History of Mystery,’ where visitors will get to walk through the rich history of magic through the ages. The park is not just about magic as an art form. It is also about the science behind magic. At the science museum that will form part of the park, little magician Harry, an animated character and star of the museum, will take the young and old through the basic principles of science through magic. There are a variety of puzzles to solve and knick-knack to buy from the Kiddie’s virtual supermarket, each move testing the mathematical skills of the visitors. In the world of mirrors, the spectators will be spellbound by optical illusions.

A street corner has been designed especially for street magicians with a view to reviving and preserving street magic. “Street magicians are often considered gypsies and not acknowledged, while the truth is that they are the most talented magicians and those who preserve traditional Indian magic,” says Mr. Muthukad, who is ‘Magic Planet’ executive director.

Also getting ready are facilities to showcase shadow magic, besides a mega magic theatre where the audience will get to experience the thrills of magic supported by sound and light effects, and a theatre where major works from world literature will get a magical interpretation.

Magician Muthukad brings the curtain down on his professional career

Muthukad explained that he was ending his professional career to work for the Different Arts Centre, an initiative launched for the differently abled children at the Magic Planet in Kazhakoottam. He would be working towards raising it to the standards of a university.

Muthukad is bidding adieu to his professional life of four-and-a-half decades. He has decided not to hold shows for remuneration. But he would continue to be a magician as he will be teaching the differently-abled children.
