Once upon a time, in a small village nestled deep within a dense forest, there lived a notorious witch named Helena. She was known throughout the land for her dark magic and cruel nature. The villagers were terrified of her and believed that she possessed incredible powers, capable of causing great destruction. Helena had a reputation for manipulating people's minds, casting spells on unsuspecting victims, and brewing deadly potions. Legends spoke of her ability to control the elements and harness the energy of the moon. Whispers in the village claimed that she had made a pact with a demon, granting her immortality and extraordinary abilities.

The Magic Lamp Inn opened in 1955 but the building was a restaurant since the 1940s and retains its rustic charm, with lots of brick and stone, and a unique Spanish tile roof with tiles of different shades of red arranged in a variety of interesting patterns. It really must be seen in person to be appreciated!

On the right South side are the Magic Lamp Inn which is just out of view , followed by historic Vince s Spaghetti, which opened in Ontario in 1945, then later at this location in 1984 but the building looks much older. Magic Lamp Inn, Route 66, Rancho Cucamonga, California – CLOSED

I’ve driven most of what’s left of Route 66 in California and the stretch through the ‘Inland Empire’ of San Bernardino County is one of the most boring stretches, with mile after mile of chain stores and restaurants, ugly shopping centers, and suburban tract homes. But there is a short segment on Foothill Blvd in Rancho Cucamonga that is well worth a drive for a good meal, especially after dark.

This daytime shot I took in 2008 gives you a bit of an idea how this stretch of road looks. On the right (South) side are the Magic Lamp Inn (which is just out of view), followed by historic Vince’s Spaghetti, which opened in Ontario in 1945, then later at this location in 1984 (but the building looks much older). On the left when I took the photo there was an old fruit and vegetable stand, which may be gone now, followed by a low Spanish style building, which is now a sushi restaurant, and then at the intersection with San Bernardino Rd. stands the lovely and historic Sycamore Inn, which deserves a post of its own (to follow later).

But I recommend you drive it at night.

The incredible neon sign still has a flame coming out of its spout!

Inside is a large cocktail lounge, then past that there is this wonderful fireplace seating area. Notice the massive cactus outside in front of the window.

The fireplace after dark looking through the front window.

The food is traditional steakhouse fare, featuring USDA Prime beef, and most dinners come with a fabulous relish tray, delicious cheese bread (a specialty of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire), vegetable, and choice of potato.

Around the bend is a visit to our next stop, the Sycamore Inn.

They locked their doors at night, lit candles to ward off evil spirits, and wore charms for protection. Despite their precautions, Helena always found a way to torment them. One fateful day, a young girl named Lily stumbled upon a hidden book in her grandmother's attic. The old, dusty tome seemed to call out to her, and without thinking, she opened it. Within its pages, she discovered ancient spells and incantations, as well as the name "Mercury." Intrigued by the mysterious connection between the book and the witch, Lily embarked on a quest to learn more about Helena and her ties to Mercury. She consulted with the village elders, studied forgotten legends, and sought guidance from wise healers. Gradually, she unraveled the secrets hidden within the pages of the book. Lily discovered that Mercury was an elemental being, known as the Messenger of the Gods in ancient mythology. It was said that the witch had somehow obtained Mercury's favor, enabling her to access his powers. This newfound knowledge fueled Lily's determination to find a way to break the witch's connection to Mercury. Through her research, Lily stumbled upon an ancient ritual that supposedly allowed one to communicate with the elemental beings. She gathered the necessary ingredients and prepared herself for the arduous process. The village watched with anticipation, hoping that Lily would succeed in freeing them from Helena's reign of terror. Under a moonless sky, Lily performed the ritual, chanting incantations and holding aloft a pouch of herbs gathered from the forest. Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the clearing, and a voice echoed in her mind. It was Mercury, the elemental being himself. With his guidance, Lily devised a plan to confront Helena and sever her connection to Mercury. Armed with the knowledge she had acquired, Lily embarked on a dangerous journey to the witch's lair. She braved treacherous paths, battling mythical creatures and overcoming numerous trials on her way. Finally, she stood before Helena, ready to face the witch and break the hold she had on Mercury. The confrontation was intense, with spells and potions being thrown in every direction. But Lily remained steadfast, reciting the ancient incantation she had learned. As the incantation reached its climax, Lily could sense a powerful force surging through her. The energy of Mercury pulsed, enveloping Helena and severing the connection that had bound them. The witch let out a blood-curdling scream as her power waned, leaving her weak and vulnerable. With the bond broken, Helena was left powerless and defeated. The villagers rejoiced as they realized that their tormentor had been defeated by a young girl armed with knowledge and courage. Lily had proven that even the most formidable witches could be vanquished with the right combination of determination and understanding. The witch had ended her reign of terror, and the village lived in peace once more. The legend of Helena and her connection to Mercury faded over time, becoming nothing more than whispers amongst the elders. Lily's brave actions would forever be remembered as a tale of triumph over darkness, and a reminder that knowledge and bravery can conquer even the most fearsome of foes..
