Mirror Magic is a novel written by Linda Chapman. This enchanting story takes readers on a magical adventure filled with suspense and excitement. I definitely did not think this was anything close to the best show I have ever seen but it was, in it's own incredibly wonky ways, very enjoyable. It kind of hurts to see that it has a 7.14 on MAL which I know I'm not supposed to use as a benchmark anyways but I can understand why people would rate it so low. All things considered it wasn't very good from a writing standpoint but I think it had its merits. I wonder if better shows were coming out at the time and this one just happened to not keep up so it got scrapped since even though I don't think it's amazing I think it still deserves better than the current MAL score that it has. Just my opinion and I wanted to mention it since I didn't expect to enjoy it at all especially since I initially dropped it back when it was airing (another thing that I think played a role in people struggling to enjoy it other than the writing was the individual episodes would become strangely episodic at times). I didn't think I would get PADS from a show like this but even though it's not that intense I just wanted to talk about it.

Plot Summary: The Waldstein Academy is an institute devoted to studies on paranormal disciplines, thus becoming known as the Occult Academy. Maya Kumashiro returns to this place to attend the funeral of the former principal, Junichiro Kumashiro, her father. Maya, a skeptic who hates the occult, meets Fumiaki Uchida, a time agent from the future sent to 1999 to prevent the apocalyptic Nostradamus Prophecies from happening. The predictions state that the school will be ground zero of the cataclysm that will destroy the world. They must team up to discover not only what actually led to her father's demise, they have limited time to find out what is the key that triggers the beginning of the end.

Put simply, the creators behind Occult Academy had some ideas about what they wanted in their show, and what they wanted their show to be, and they went for all of those without taking a moment to understand what it would all mean for the big picture. For instance, the creators decided they wanted this to include everything and the kitchen sink – an approach that might have worked in an X-Files sort of “monster of the week” setup, but which doesn't pay off when there's a time limit and climax, and an overriding goal that our heroes should be paying attention to. And there's a moment, towards the end of the show, where we get the big “Future refused to change” moment. And it's a good moment, but it's not in a scenario where it really makes sense. The reveal of the villain is in a similar space: I get what they were going for, and why someone would have said in abstract “I want this to happen”, but there wasn't enough care taken to actually have the moment land; it was both too easy to guess because huge amounts of run time would have failed to be germane to anything otherwise, and impossible because there were no in-character hints or clues as to the outcome of the mystery. There's yet another scene in the final sequence, and it's supposed to be a touching scene, but it falls flat because the character involved never got enough earnest development, they were treated as a joke so when they try to get used for heavy drama it doesn't land. The climax as well is a good sequence, probably one of only two action sequences in the show (along with the fake-out climax) to be worth watching even if it still wasn't amazing in the pantheon of anime as a whole, but it happens so quickly that you can't really enjoy it. When a big, climactic fight comes out in a show like Shakugan no Shana, or even a generally weak show that knows a little better about what to do here like Star Driver, the show works to get you excited for the action, building up what's coming before actually delivering. Occult Academy just throws you what it has cold, because someone really wanted that moment, or that scene, or that theme, and didn't care how it went together.

As the story progresses, she develops her own magical abilities and becomes a formidable force against the sorceress. The plot builds up to an epic climax where Tamsin must confront the sorceress and use her newfound powers to save the entire realm. What sets Mirror Magic apart is its captivating storytelling and vivid world-building. Linda Chapman expertly creates a magical universe that readers can fully immerse themselves in. The descriptions of the parallel world, its inhabitants, and the various magical creatures are richly detailed, allowing readers to visualize and experience this fantastical realm. Chapman's writing style is engaging and accessible, making Mirror Magic an enjoyable read for both younger and older audiences. The pacing keeps readers hooked as Tamsin's journey unfolds, and the suspense and action sequences keep the story moving at an exciting pace.
