In my region, there is a small but tight-knit community of pagans. The term "pagan" refers to a person who follows a nature-based or polytheistic religious path, often honoring ancient traditions and deities. While paganism encompasses a wide range of beliefs and practices, those within the pagan community in my region tend to focus on honoring the cycles of nature and building a deep spiritual connection with the earth. One of the main ideas that stands out within the pagan community in my region is the idea of connecting with nature. Pagans often see the earth as sacred and view themselves as being a part of nature, rather than separate from it. This belief is reflected in their practices, such as observing the changing seasons and celebrating holidays that align with the natural cycle of the year.

Our updated version of A History of Magic therefore includes even more information on the non-wizarding communities which helped shape our own societies. As such, I am better versed in the history of and theories about early civilizations of the Middle East and Europe, as well as the kingdoms and empires that predate modern Western Civilization.

This belief is reflected in their practices, such as observing the changing seasons and celebrating holidays that align with the natural cycle of the year. They may hold rituals outdoors, taking time to meditate, offer prayers, or perform other ceremonies in natural settings. Another prominent aspect of paganism in my region is the honoring of ancient traditions and deities.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but history is actually an ever-changing field. Magical history is every bit as foggy and whimsical as every other aspect of magical studies. Every day, new data is fathered and new theories are composed. Where does this new knowledge come from? Those that tell us the most are plants and rocks, which endure time far more gracefully than mankind. Here is yet another situation where the Muggle sciences far surpass our own methods. For a long while, Muggles have used a method called “archaeology” to study artefacts and fossils buried deep below the ground in an attempt to discover the past. While Muggles developed this area of study, wizards focused more on experimental spell-and potion- making. By the time we got to the Muggle archaeological records, they had already succeeded in tainting and misinterpreting many of their samples that were clearly magical. In the past decades, the field of magical history has taken enormous strides by analyzing these Muggle records and discovering ones of our own, allowing us to now enhance and refute several portions of Bagshot’s original work. For example, while Bagshot’s texts on the Goblin Rebellions speak of the fierce goblin leader Colin the Conqueror, recent evidence has revealed that Colin never existed and was actually a character created by a Goblin group to intimidate the Wizarding Armies. While maintaining a great deal of Bagshot’s original work, the Hogwarts textbook staff has worked to update her book. Of course, we are confident that the majority of our information will also need to be revised in the next few decades.

Many pagans are drawn to the myths and folklore of the past, seeking to reclaim and revitalize ancient spiritual practices that may have been lost or suppressed over time. They may work with specific gods, goddesses, or spirits from various pantheons, such as Greek, Roman, Norse, or Celtic. These deities are seen as guides and sources of inspiration, with pagans often forming personal relationships with them through prayer, meditation, and ritual. Within the pagan community in my region, there is a strong emphasis on community and mutual support. Pagans often come together for gatherings and events, such as public rituals, workshops, or social gatherings. These gatherings provide opportunities for pagans to connect with like-minded individuals, share knowledge and experiences, and build meaningful relationships. Additionally, the pagan community often extends support to its members in times of need, whether it be through offering emotional support, practical assistance, or spiritual guidance. Overall, paganism in my region is a vibrant, diverse, and close-knit community that values nature, ancient traditions, and community connection. While each individual may have their own unique beliefs and practices, they are united by a shared reverence for the earth and a desire to forge a deeper spiritual connection with the world around them..
