October 31-November 01: Samhain
Samhain (Sow-inn) is the word for November in Gaelic. Traditionally celebrated from October 31 to November 1, it’s one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals. The others are Imbolc, Beltane and Lughnasadh. The Festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the harvest season. It takes place at the midpoint between the fall equinox and the winter solstice.
It begins the dark half of the year. The veil between the physical world and the spirit world is at its thinnest, allowing spirits to interact with the living. (This might also let in evil spirits though, so precautions were taken.)
It’s a time when the deceased are remembered and honored, the autumn harvest is reaped, and the preparation for winter begin. Samhain is also consider the The Celtic New Year.
Samhain Traditions and Customs:
- Offerings were left outside villages to keep evil fairies away.
- Carving turnips and placing a burning coal inside (now pumpkins and candles), to scare away evil spirits.
- Feasting, drinking, playing games, pranking, and making noise.
- At supper ancestors were invited to partake and cake is left out at night for them to eat.
- Windows were left open to allow the spirits of the ancestors to enter.
- Cattle were brought down to winter pastures and some were chosen for slaughter.
- There were divination rituals around the fires.
- Guising (trick-or-treating) was a part of Samhain from at least the 16th century.
