I'm wondering what people use to bind the loose-ish plaster to the lath, other than Big Wally's? I eventually need to do this to the whole house and that product seems really expensive. Do people use plaster weld and something else? Not sure what the traditional method is?

I saw Ober51's post below mine on superficial repairs, but how do you handle something a little bit more complicated.
So I finally got the ceiling clean of 1970's spackle? stucco? (what do you call this abomination?). So now I am working on the plaster repair. Most of it is super easy just little hairline cracks but there are a few spots that are a bit beyond my previous experiences with plaster repair.
Can you please advise me how to proceed?
The trouble spots are predictably around the chimney. When I touch the ceiling very close to the chimney, it feel a little loose and the plaster of the ceiling that meets the wall there is cracked. Here's a photo:
This spot is really messy! It is the site of a really crappy repair. Part of the plaster wall juts out higher than the other
So since some of these spots are not attached to the lathe any longer, I guess I need to reattach them. What method do you guys recommend and do you have any tips to keep me from doing more damage. I'm a bit nervous about poking that corner of the ceiling and if I need to drill to attach the plaster, can that even be done around a chimney?
I read a bit about "Big Wally's Plaster Magic" and it seems like it might be a good solution for this job because time is a concern. I need to have the room done by the end of the month. Any thoughts on this?

(my amatuer advice, but I've done a fair amount of this) I would pull all the damaged areas out completely there, down to the lath. Plaster magic would probably be ok for it, but you might want to watch some of "See Jane Drill" videos on plaster, they're very helpful and excellent. Any area of a few square (2-3) feet is an easy repair, and the wall will be as good as new. You would need to buy a few tools and materials but anyone with plaster walls should have a trowel, hydrated lime and gypsum veneer handy
Don't be afraid to rip the stuff out. It was meant to be repaired this way in perpetuity.
NB: keep in mind the ceiling area around the chimney is harder to fix. You might want to get in the attic and see how the wall meets with the chimney from above, to make sure if you pull that stuff off there really is something behind it .
Then again, one of the nice things about plaster is that it looks good whether it's falling apart or in perfect shape

Yeah I have all the basic tools and supplies, I've used them for the previous repairs I've done. This job is just little bit more in depth than my previous repairs. Stuff I've done in the past has been pretty superficial, this seems more structural as the ceiling moves a little bit near where it meets the wall.
