Iona Sheehan is a likeable character whose character changes throughout the book. I did find her puppy dog enthusiasm and “I just want to be loved” attitude annoying in the beginning. She has a low self esteem, which is to be expected considering her parents, but it translates into a pushiness that only ends up with her getting her feelings getting hurt. Her maturity, both physically and emotionally, grows throughout the story and towards the end she becomes a more secure version of herself. I enjoyed her gift with horses. It opens up an emotional pathway for her that not only links her to the past but allows for her to lay roots and become the person she will need to be in the future.
She meets a young woman who lets her fly her hawk, but, when Breen tries to locate the woman later, there s no one by her name at the falconry school. They are therefore saying this isn t a good example of past triumphs and, rather than be put off, potential followers should read the acclaimed and aforementioned The Sisters and or Sign of Seven.
The creativity and imagination behind these spells are what make them so appealing to both children and adults. In the world of Lakaloopsy, star magic spells are often performed by characters who possess magical abilities or who have a connection to the stars. Fans will be thrilled with the author’s return to Ireland and with the magical themes.
