Disneyland will unveil a replacement this week for the popular annual passholder program used by a million fans that will require advance reservations as part of a new system designed to reduce crowding and smooth demand throughout the year.

The new Magic Key annual passes will go on sale no earlier than 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 with prices ranging from $399 to $1,399. Disneyland ended its former four-decade-old annual pass program in January during the extended coronavirus closures of the parks.

Here are the seven things you need to know before you buy Disneyland’s new Magic Key annual pass.

1) Do you need to buy your annual pass on the first day they are available?

It is not necessary to buy your Magic Key on Aug. 25. Disneyland anticipates a high volume of annual pass sales on the first day. Expect long virtual waits if you absolutely must be among the first to purchase Magic Key.

Keyholders who buy their pass in the first 66 days — in honor of Disneyland’s 66th anniversary — will receive a swag box in the mail with a free pin, button, magnet, lanyard and park map.

2) When can you start using your Magic Key?

You can use your annual pass as soon as you purchase it — provided your pass is not blocked out and reservations are available. Keyholders can make two, four or six reservations at a time in a 90-day window depending on their pass type. You can make another reservation as soon as you enter the park or cancel your reservation.

3) Can you make a parkhopper reservation?

Magic Key reservations can be made for one or both parks depending on availability for that day. You do not need to make two separate reservations to visit both parks on one day — parkhoppers count as a single reservation.

Parkhoppers must select a starting park and begin their visit there. Parkhopping is not permitted before 1 p.m. Parkhoppers that show up after 1 p.m. can start at either Disneyland or DCA.

4) Can you make reservations for your friends and family?

Magic Key accounts can be linked so reservations can be made as a group.

5) Where can you buy the Magic Key annual pass?

New annual passes will only be sold on the Disneyland website or Disneyland app. No passes will be sold at Disneyland ticket booths.

6) Are monthly payments still available?

Only residents living in California zip codes are eligible for the monthly payment plan.

7) Can you apply an unused Disneyland ticket toward a Magic Key pass?

Most unused and unexpired Disneyland tickets can be upgraded to a Magic Key pass. You cannot apply a complimentary, special event, expired, partially or fully used ticket.

Update: This story has been updated to reflect which locations can use the monthly payment option.
