A wooded area where 19 women were hanged after being accused of being witches in Salem, Massachusetts, centuries ago, is now a plot of land overlooking a Walgreens, researchers have revealed. The location, known as Proctor's Ledge, was confirmed to be the location of the 1692 hangings following the Salem Witch Trials by seven scholars with the Gallows Hill Project. 'This is part of our history and this is an opportunity for us to be honest about what took place,' she told The Boston Globe. It was previously believed that 19 of those who were executed during the witch trials were executed on Salem's Gallows Hill. Another five accused of witchcraft died in jail, and one was crushed to death. But through aerial photography, witness accounts and advanced mapping technology, the researchers were able to determine that Proctor's Ledge was the real execution spot. '[We] asked locals where they thought it was and every last one of them told us to go to this location,' Wiccan Michele Ruscitti, who visited Salem in 2006 with her husband, told the New York Post. 'I found it odd, since the town embraces their history, that there were no markers there. None … just a Walgreens on the corner,' she added.
