Completion, Affordability, Excelsior Scholarship Highlight Zimpher's Final SUNY Address

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In her eighth and final State of the University address, State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher announced several new initiatives SUNY is undertaking, including a FAFSA outreach to encourage more families to apply for financial aid.

"Simply, no one else does what SUNY can do," Zimpher proclaimed as she began her address Monday in Albany.

Zimpher also announced the creation of the SUNY Impact Foundation, to seek private sector investment in SUNY programs.

"Our promise to investors: Send your money to the SUNY Impact Foundation and we will allocate it to campuses who know how to move the dial," Zimpher said.

Zimpher also praised the Excelsior scholarship, which if approved by lawmakers, would provide free college tuition to families or individuals making less than $125,000 per year. She said it would greatly benefit SUNY's 64 campuses and the potential students.

"It puts the burden on the awardees to stay enrolled full-time and to stay in school, because we all know that if you drop out, you may not come back, and you drop out with debt that you don't have a degree for," she said.

Zimpher did not mention the last year of turmoil at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. The last year included the resignation of its president, Alain Kaloyeros, who was indicted on federal corruption charges, and the anchor tenant of its Mohawk Valley campus pulling out of a multi-billion dollar investment.

In an interview after her address, Zimpher said SUNY Poly will rebound.

"All that I can do is ensure that we have the leadership on campus that we need," she said. "We acted immediately and strategically and we're going to continue acting that way."

Zimpher also said SUNY plans to continue to be a close partner in the Start-Up New York program. The governor's office is planning on re-branding it after a slow start.

Zimpher is stepping down from her post later this year. The search for her replacement continues. To watch the full 2017 State of the University address, CLICK HERE.

The annual Mascot Madness tournament is a grind for those who compete. Our mascots are busy all year long rooting on their campus athletic teams, engaging with students, and carrying the SUNY flags throughout New York State. This competition is their chance to shine beyond their campus communities, and they put their hard work and dedication into being the best mascots they can be during tournament time.
