Office-Appropriate Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is right around the corner! I don’t know about your office, but mine has an annual costume party. It’s in the office, during work hours (read: please behave). So how do you find an office-appropriate Halloween costume? Here are some tips:

1. AIM FOR FUNNY OR CLEVER, NOT SEXY

This is not the time to try to get the attention of your office crush by showing up in a sexy Wonder Woman bodysuit costume. Instead, show your wit and creativity by aiming for a clever or funny costume. Or just wear a basic costume because you’re a team player and you should wear a costume if there’s a costume party. Hello witch, cowgirl, or teacher.

Last year I was a Miss-Demeanor lol. My assistant was Flo from Progressive. We wore entertaining and funny costumes and I didn’t feel shy or embarrassed about my boss seeing what I wore. Plus, I had a lot of fun explaining my costume to people.

I would’ve had less fun getting weird looks and side eyes all day if I wore a schoolgirl outfit or something else inappropriate.

2. AVOID ANYTHING SHEER, SHORT, OR SHOWING CLEAVAGE

How sheer is too sheer ? If you’ve read much of my blog, you know I don’t like sheer at work. Try shining your cell phone flashlight on your clothes. If you can see an outline of your bra or bra straps in bright lights, your costume is too sheer.

How short is too short ? I’m pretty modest, but I stick to the no-more-than-four-inches-above-the-knee rule. Yes, this makes it tough for tall people. Sorry not sorry you were born with amazing, beautiful, long legs and have to wear longer clothes because of them.

How much cleavage is too much ? No more than what you’d wear to work any other day.

3. NO INAPPROPRIATE JOKES, GESTURES, OR NUDITY

We don’t want to know your thoughts on the Kavanaugh hearings, nor do we want you to dress up like Donald Trump and mock Dr. Ford. Please, no nudity, even if it’s one of those hideous t-shirts that shows a shapely fit body because you want to be self-deprecating and make fun of your figure. Please spare us from having to do the awkward I-feel-uncomfortable-but-don’t-want-to-rock-the-boat-by-saying-something laugh.

So, what are your options for an office-appropriate Halloween costume?

  • basic costumes (witch, nun, police officer, doctor, lawyer)
  • funny costumes (sand-witch, a taco, smarty pants (glue Smarties on your pants)), find more here
  • celebrities (Serena Williams, Meghan Markle, Rosie the Riveter)
  • pair up with a coworker (Elmo and the Cookie Monster, Chip and Joanna Gaines, Cruella de Vil and a Dalmatian)

Save the Jessica Rabbit costumes for the weekend.
