It is often said that magic exists only in the realm of fiction and illusion. However, when we look closely at our own lives, we may realize that magic is not so far-fetched after all. In fact, we all have the power to create magic in our own lives and in the lives of others. Magic, in this sense, refers to the extraordinary and seemingly impossible things that happen when we believe in ourselves and the world around us. It is the ability to transform ordinary moments into something extraordinary, to find beauty and wonder in the mundane. It is the power to create positive change and make a difference, no matter how small.

Buddhism and witchcraft - are these contradictions?

So I am a practising Witch, but have always been very interested in Buddhism and the monastic lifestyle. Before we get into this I will clear up what "witchcraft" means to me, as it is different for everyone and most people have a lot of misconceptions about it. Please read this with an open mind and at least entertain that it may be true for me if it is not for you.

For me, witchcraft is not a religion and is not attached to religious belief. It is spiritual though because this is where my animist beliefs come from - that every natural thing in the universe has its own energy and perhaps spirit, some of which are more easy for us to see and some of which are more accessible than others, this extending to the land itself and natural structures. My belief is that because we are the universe it is possible to weave and influence our own fate by the interactions with unknown forces.

The way I have done this has been through trance work coupled by traditional techniques and workings, to a lot of success - some examples being sending healing energy to my sick mother, attracting good luck and prosperity, and banishing dangerous people from the lives of my loved ones when police involvement was proving futile.

Although witchcraft has been a useful tool for me, I find myself doing less and less workings for my own benefit, apart from general protection spells. I've come to realise that ultimately magic is about manifesting desires, and I simply have less and less of them and wish to rid myself of them completely. This is when I went on a few monastic retreats and found the lifestyle I lead there beautiful and fulfilling. However, when meditating I still find myself instinctively pulled to connect to the local tree spirirt for example and sense their energy, or I automatically see an energetic field around me when I close my eyes from years of trying to see it, when I now can't NOT see it.

So my question is, are the beliefs I've developed in my practise incompatible with Buddhism or can I simply stop doing the actual magic, connect with nature in the way that feels natural to me and still follow buddhist teachings?

The beauty of a sunset, the sound of raindrops on a window, or the feeling of sand between our toes - these are all magical moments that remind us of the wonder and awe in the world. When we take the time to appreciate these small miracles, we bring a sense of magic into our own lives. In conclusion, we all have the power to create magic in our own lives and in the lives of others. By believing in ourselves, taking action, and spreading love and positivity, we can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary.
