I'll be honest and admit that I am often wary of the graphic novel genre because, while it can appear child-friendly, the content can often be heavy and dark. But my daughter has been increasingly interested in graphic novels, so I did a little digging (and asked for your help!) and am happy to share a list of graphic novels I can recommend! This is far from a comprehensive list, but I hope this gives you some great ideas.
Here's what I've learned:
+ Some children - especially visual learners and reluctant readers - are drawn to these books far more than picture-less chapter books and they can become a gateway for further, deeper reading. My daughter devours these books, and I know she understands them because she can clearly recount the plot lines.
+ I cannot emphasize this enough: be vigilant about unfamiliar titles and do some research before handing a graphic novel to your child. One quick way to research content without reading the entire book is by referencing the reviews on pluggedin.com.
