The orbs are often small, about the size of a tennis ball, and can easily be held in the palm of the hand. Despite their small size, they pack a significant magical punch. When a witch holds the orb, they can feel the energy coursing through it, ready to be unleashed.

After typing up a large Gnoll and flind lair for the party to hopefully smite into oblivion (eventually), and writing out what spells the 2 flind witch doctors (i treat as mages) had in their spell books, i had one which i gave chromatic orb and ghoul's touch both from the Wiz handbook.. And i noticed neither were among the spell lists in the CRE program.

Then i also remembered we have had a # of threads discussing this spell.
After doing a quick re-write, this is what i have come up with. Little changed, OTHER than when the additional colors come in (separating by 2 levels, vice 1 leve, after you get orange at 3rd..
I also changed around the damage effect..

Chromatic Orb

Description:
This spell creates a 4 inch diameter sphere of energy to appear in the caster's hands. Within the limits below, the sphere can appear in a variety of colors; each color indicating a specific effect or special power. The caster can hurl this
sphere at an enemy up to 30 yards away, providing there's no barrier between him and the caster. If the target is up to 10 yards, the to hit roll is made at a +3 bonus. If within 10 to 20 yards, the bonus is only +2 to the caster's thac0. If between 20 and 30 yards, the bonus drops to +1.
If the Chromatic orb misses the target, it just dissipates harmlessly. If it hits however, the target must then make a save. If the save's successful, he suffer's the listed effect by color, sometimes needing a 2nd saving throw. The Caster can create a single orb of any color from his level down, so a 5th level mage can create a white, red or orange orb. The material component is a gem of the appropriate color, worth not less than 50gp

Light from an orb, causes the victim to be surrounded by a light out to 20 feet, as if he was the victim of a Light spell. This lasts for 1 round in which his AC is penalized by -4, and he suffers -4 to his thac0 and saves for the round.
Heat is so intense it can melt 1 cubic yard of ice. The victim suffers -1 to both his Strength and Dex scores (or just a flat -1 to hit and AC for creatures without scores) for 1 round.
Fire from the orb ignites all combust-able material within 3 feet of the victim.
Blindness from the orb is as the Blindness spell, but lasts just 1 round per
Level of caster.
Stinking cloud from the orb surrounds the victim hit out to 5ft radi. The victim and all in that cloud must save vs poison or be reeling and unable to attack until they leave the area.
Magnetism from the orb only has an effect if the target's wearing metallic armor. If so, the armor's magnetized for 3d4 rounds, and other iron objects within 3 feet will stick to the armor. Only a Dispel Magic or similar spell will release the stuck objects till the duration expires.
Paralysis is as if the target was struck by a Ghoul, and lasts for 2d8+4 (6-20) rounds, though a successful save vs paralyzation halves this.
Petrification from the orb makes the

Target turn into stone as if Medusa had gazed upon him if he fails a save vs petrification. Even if he saves, he is still slowed as the spell for 2d4 rounds.
Death causes the victim to die unless he saves vs death magic. Even if he saves, he is still paralyzed for 2-5 (d4+1) rounds.
