Ed Emberly drawing materials?

What art materials are best for following the drawing instructions in Ed Emberly’s kids books? The drawings are additive so I’m stumped, since most kids art materials like crayons can’t achieve the additive effect. Thanks!

When I was a kid and Ed Emberly was teaching me to draw, I just used thin magic markers, but did you have a certain book in mind?

I think fine tipped coloured markers would be best. Pentel makes some nice sets. You may also want some nontoxic stamp pads for doing the fingerprint art stuff.

Ah, thank you for asking this question! I have had a half-formed Ask in my head for months trying to identify who Emberley was based on dim childhood memories of trying out his drawing techniques! I recognised his name instantly when I saw it, so thank you.

Like jessamyn, I think I probably used magic markers, but I expect coloured pencils would work as well - or a combo.

Another Ed Emberley alum here - I would go with colored pencils, since you can erase pencil if you make mistakes.

Are you a grown up?

Don't worry about erasing. Mistakes are part of drawing.

mrs. mmascolino is an elementary and middle school art teacher and uses Emberley books in her classes. She thinks the above suggestions are good ones.

Here’s another vote for Pentel markers from someone who is having a severe nostalgia attack right now. (Said nostalgia attack is constructed from easy-to-draw geometric shapes)

The Faber-Castell Artist Brush Pens are another good option if you're okay spending a little more for materials. One of their main benefits is that the colors layer well, and the brush tips are smaller than the Tombow brush pens, which can be a little more versatile. (Although, the Tombows blend better with water, if that's a consideration.)
