Boggs: Close the book on umpire's opinions
For a man who earns a living making judgment calls, American League umpire Durwood Merrill showed little judgment in a recent book.
Merrill, considered one of the more flamboyant umpires in the game, has penned a book entitled You're Out and You're Ugly Too.
First of all, the book is marginally entertaining at best. While he tells readers over and over about his reputation for being funny, most anecdotes are hardly belly-laugh material.
But more important, the book includes Merrill's opinions on numerous ballplayers. Considering Merrill is an active umpire, the book creates the appearance of a conflict of interest, at the very least.
"I think it presents a conflict," Devil Rays third baseman Wade Boggs said. "What if he's ripping a guy in the book and then he's supposed to be making calls on him the next day?"
Boggs is the only Tampa Bay player figured prominently in the book. Merrill calls Boggs one of the best hitters he's ever seen, but adds a caveat:
"There was always something magical about watching him hit. Wade could put wood on the baseball almost at will, and during his salad days, he had the best eye I'd ever seen in baseball. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, I truly believe he belongs in Cooperstown.
"The sad part is watching a great hitter in decline. The best years are clearly behind Wade. You know an older hitter is struggling when he fouls off a pitch that he used to send on a rope into the gap. You see it when he can no longer handle the inside pitch."
Boggs, who has not read the book, said he does not approve of the genre.
"I'm not a big fan of the tell-all book. I don't know what satisfaction they get from writing it. Maybe he's making a lot of money, I don't know," Boggs said. "If you lift a garbage can lid, you should expect to find garbage. I just don't see a need for it."
Ken Griffey Jr. wrote the foreword for the book, leading the folks at STATS Inc. to look into the Seattle star's performance in his 37 games with Merrill behind the plate.
Griffey's batting average was .238 with eight home runs and 26 strikeouts in 143 at-bats.
