The Wagster’s came to our church to do a show. Knowing them personally you would say I’m biased. But not so because I had never seen them perform until now. Hannah and Brandon light up the stage with their magical personalities. I was sitting on the front row and was mesmerized by their talents and skills. I was sitting there watching ever so closely to see how they were doing it and I absolutely couldn’t figure it out. Seeing Hannah suspended from the top of a broom was crazy amazing. Bringing the Magic to Williamsburg: Wagsters Magic Theater

WILLIAMSBURG — Magic is coming to the Historic Triangle this summer in the form of the Wagsters Magic Theatre.

Award-winning magic couple, Brandon and Hannah Wagster, are bringing their show chock full of illusions, sleight of hand, escapes, and their heartfelt story to an intimate, eighty person theatre located on Olde Town Road.

The South Carolina natives have performed for audiences across the country and are planning to share their talents with the Historic Triangle on a regular basis beginning in June.

“When you think of a magic show, you think of a big Las Vegas show,” Brandon said of their act. “That is what to expect when you come our show. The flashy costumes, the lights, the big boxes, disappearing, reappearing. At its core that is what our show is. But our show has morphed and is continuing to morph into a story of our lives. By the time you leave, you are going to know Hannah and I. You are going to know our story.”

The Historic Triangle newcomers are far from beginners when it comes to magic.

Brandon has been practicing his craft since receiving a magic kit for Christmas when he was six years old.

“Magic was the thing that clicked for me,” Brandon remembers. “I started doing magic for a paying audience when I was about 11 years old. I worked at a restaurant doing tableside magic for a few years. I also did magic competitions throughout the southeast.”

While she did not starting doing magic as early as Brandon did, Hannah does come from a performing arts background. She spent her childhood learning a slew of musical instruments as well as singing and dance. In truth, she did not initially care for magic.

That changed when Brandon and Hannah began to date in 2010. At one point early on in the relationship, the two women who assisted Brandon on stage left to embark upon magic careers of their own. Knowing he needed assistance, Hannah readily volunteered.

“At first we were definitely ‘magician and assistant’ because he had been doing magic way longer than I had,” Hannah says of their early days performing together as magicians. “Brandon would perform and I would perform and the audience hated me because I had two years of experience versus his 12. It’s taken awhile to catch up, but I think I am holding my own. Now it’s not just him throwing me into boxes, I throw him into some, too.”

Throughout the course of their marriage, the Wagsters have earned a slew of recognition and awards from the global magic community. The most prestigious of their accolades being the 2020 Merlin Award from the International Magicians Society for “Best Theatrical Magic Production.” Brandon says that the award is tantamount to an Oscar in their circles.

Going forward, the Wagsters have big plans for both their theatre and show.

Currently they are actively renovating the building, which to date has only housed church congregations.

By bringing in a stage, lighting, sound equipment, chairs, concessions, the Wagsters plan to put on a show that delights people of all ages and backgrounds.

“There is so much garbage in the world,” Brandon says. “We live in a world of social media, 24-hour news networks, pandemics and wars and everything else. We just want people to walk in these doors, and for 75 minutes put all that out of their heads. To be a kid again.”

As of yet, the Wagsters do not have an exact date for their debut in Williamsburg, but they are hoping for mid to late June.

‘More than a magic show’: Year-round magic venue set to open in Williamsburg

Magic is coming to the Williamsburg area when The Wagsters Magic Theatre opens later this month.

Brandon and Hannah Wagster are the married duo behind the area’s first and only year-round magic venue. The couple has been renovating the theater, a former church on Olde Towne Road, in preparation for their June 17th grand opening.

Tickets for opening night went on sale Wednesday, with about a third of the seats reserved within a day.

The renovations have consumed their time since moving to Williamsburg in March, the Wagsters said. They’ve painted the walls, installed decorations and learned to build their own stage, all while programming their own performances.

“It’s been a labor of love,” Brandon Wagster, 31, said.

The Wagsters plan to have 200 performances a year, providing audiences with what they describe as “an intimate Las Vegas-style magic show” with disappearing acts, daring escapes, sleight of hand and mind reading.

“The show really is more than just a magic show. It’s very theatrical,” Brandon Wagster said. “The main goal is we want people to forget about everything outside of these four walls when they come in these doors.”

Moving their show to Williamsburg was an act of fate — a moment to chase their dreams, the Wagsters said. They want their audience to feel that sense of magical escape during the show.

The move to Williamsburg began after their plans to open a theater in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, were put on hold after the theater they were employed by fired everyone on staff due to the pandemic. By chance, a friend recommended Williamsburg, and the Wagsters fell in love with the area after a visit and quickly leased a place.

“We want to be here for the long haul, long term,” Brandon Wagster said. “We’d love to possibly expand and build our own building one day and grow into something bigger and be a staple part of the town.”

For now, though, the couple has renovated the former Calvary Chapel Williamsburg, which was located in a metal, warehouse-type building near the Williamsburg Premium Outlets in James City County. The main reception room has been converted into a ticket office, concession stand and photo booth. Magical items adorn every room of the space, including in the bathroom, where the Wagsters created a mural of 267 individual vintage magic post cards.

Just outside the auditorium, which seats 65, is a Hall of Magic, which contains memorabilia from collections of two former magicians as well as items from their own career. Standing alone on a shelf is a gold statue — the Merlin Award, the “Oscar” of the magic world that they were awarded in 2020 by the International Magicians Society for “Best Theatrical Magic Production.”

Becky Paluzsay, who owns the building, said she was immediately impressed by the young couple and felt working with them “would be good for both of us.”

“They really are first class and have done most of the renovations and painting themselves,” Paluzsay said. “They have put everything they had into the theater and show.”

The theater’s operation will mostly hinge on the Wagsters — they provide the main performance and the show is entirely operated by a computer system that controls the lights, special effects and music. There will be one backstage employee and two employees to work concessions and tickets.

“I always tell everyone the best and worst part about our magic is working together, with your spouse,” Hannah Wagster joked. “You have the best moments together but then we can also fight off stage and then have to pretend like everything’s fine and we don’t want to kill each other.”

The show is very personal to the Wagsters, as they tell their own story of how they met and their relationship, they said. They met in high school in their hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, where Brandon was already performing magic. In 2012, he had two assistants, but let them go and Hannah, whom he was dating, became his assistant.

Hannah, now 28, later became a partner, not only in 2013 when they got married, but also in the magic show. Now, the duo is excited to share their story with the Williamsburg community.

“It’s time for live entertainment to come back; there’s nothing like experiencing it in-person,” Brandon Wagster said. “I hope people will come and support us … I just can’t wait to start meeting people.”

I was really excited to get the Frog wearing witch hat squishmallow, but unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with it. The material felt cheap and the stitches were already coming undone when I received it. Additionally, the squishmallow had a strange smell that didn't go away even after multiple washes. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this particular squishmallow as it didn't meet my expectations in terms of quality.

I'm usually a big fan of squishmallows, but the Frog wearing witch hat squishmallow was a total letdown. The design was cute, but the stuffing inside was lumpy and uneven, making it uncomfortable to hold or use as a pillow. The material also felt rough and not as soft as other squishmallows I've owned. I tried returning it, but the seller wouldn't accept it. Definitely not worth the price.

The Frog wearing witch hat squishmallow didn't live up to the hype for me. The colors in person were not as vibrant as they appeared in the photos, and the size was smaller than expected. The squishy factor was also lacking, as the stuffing felt firmer and less enjoyable to squeeze. I was really hoping to love this squishmallow, but unfortunately, it just didn't deliver the same level of comfort and cuteness as others in my collection.

I was really looking forward to adding the Frog wearing witch hat squishmallow to my Halloween-themed collection, but I was extremely disappointed. The stitching was poorly done, with loose threads hanging out, and the material felt thin and flimsy. It didn't even hold its shape properly, making it difficult to display or use as a decorative item. Overall, I found this squishmallow to be of low quality and not worth the price.
