Magic City Egg Fest changes name, announces return to Colon in June

COLON, Mich. — Colon's Magic City Egg Fest has a new name.

The beloved culinary festival and barbeque competition that started in 2019 will now be known as Magic City Grill Fest, according to Tim Taylor, Chairman of Magic City Grill Fest.

“For the first three years, the centerpiece of our event and competition has been the Big Green Egg, a widely popular kamado-style grill, smoker and outdoor oven," Taylor said. “But the cornerstone of our event is truly the barbecue and the teams that prepare and serve high quality barbecue to our many tasters.”

This year's festival will include fan-favorite rounds of chicken and ribs, but will also have a brand new round for beef sliders, and an open round category that allows teams to prepare any of their favorite barbequed foods, according to Taylor.

Additionally, teams are allowed to bring two outdoor grills or smokers, as long as they do not use propane or electric, Taylor said.

Teams of no more than four chefs can sign up for the rib and chicken rounds, but have a choice between the beef sliders round or the open category.

Team fees are $100 and include six slabs of ribs, six whole cut up chickens, ten pounds of Waygu ground beef, slider buns, lump charcoal, fire starters, and an array of spices, according to Taylor.

Magic City Grill Fest is scheduled to be held at 123 E. State Street Saturday, June 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Taster's tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door until the event is sold out, organizers said.

Prizes, trophies and "bragging rights" for the best teams in each category are anticipated, along with a special "Taster's Choice Award," according to event organizers.

Proceeds will benefit the Colon American Legion Post 454.

Region’s largest magic fest happening now in West Michigan

COLON, Mich. -- The midwest's largest celebration of magic is happening this week in West Michigan.

B.J. Mallen performing Wednesday in Colon

The 82nd annual Magic Get Together lasts from Wednesday, August 7, until Saturday, August 10. The event has been held in Colon, the magic capital of the world, since 1934.

The event is known as one of the largest magic-oriented gatherings in the country.

B.J. Mallen, a magician and employee at Abbott's, says, "We only have 1,100 people or so year long. We get just as many magic enthusiasts that come through on these 4 days."

Every year, Abbotts Magic Shop hosts a long list of family-friendly events for the get together. Street performers, stage shows and lecturers will all be on hand in 2019.

There is also a "dealers room" where guests can purchase magic tricks and chat with visiting magicians. One of those visiting magicians, 87-year-old Bob Little, has been making the annual trip to Colon for over 50 years.

"Magic has changed tremendously. Its not the hobby it used to be,” he says. Little says he has noticed people's attention move away from magic in recent years to electronic devices.

At any point in the week, you can walk the streets and see magicians "busking" on the sidewalk.

The get together dates back to the 1920's when two world renowned magicians, Harry Blackstone and Percy Abbott, moved to Colon. Mallen tells FOX 17, "He (Blackstone) was looking for lakefront property to purchase because he likes to fish.”

The two magicians would form Blackstone Magic Company. After a falling out between the two, Abbott would open what would become Abbott's Magic Shop.

The next morning, Caillou wakes up to find his stockings filled with gifts and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with presents underneath. He excitedly wakes up his family, and they all gather around the tree to open their gifts. Caillou is grateful for the presents he received, but he also learns the importance of giving and sharing during the holiday season. Throughout the episode, Caillou experiences the magic of the holiday season. From writing letters to Santa, decorating the Christmas tree, attending a special concert, to the joy of opening presents, Caillou learns the value of family, love, and generosity. The episode ends with Caillou reflecting on the magical moments of the holiday season and expressing his gratitude for the memories created. It leaves a heartwarming message about the true spirit of the holidays and the joy it brings to families and children like Caillou.
