The Wicked Witch, a New Music Venue, Opens in Raleigh Thursday Night

Raleigh will grow richer by one live-music venue as of tomorrow. The owners of Ruby Deluxe, which offers live music and d.j. sets, have announced the opening of The Wicked Witch at 416 W. South Street. Pegged as Ruby Deluxe’s “nasty-cool big sister,” The Wicked Witch will continue in the spirit of its predecessor.

Daniel Tomas, a co-owner, says the venue will be “a space that hosts and fosters talent across our community by prioritizing our booking to showcase femme, queer, nonbinary, and people of color’s voices and art. Local music fans can expect an inclusive and fun atmosphere that entertains an array of nationally and internationally touring musicians, d.j.s, burlesque troupes, and drag queens.”

Named to echo witches’ historical spirit of rebelliousness, the new space builds on the foundation of Ruby Deluxe’s DIY, queer-friendly space, but on a slightly bigger scale. Tomas says the growth of that scene has necessitated the expansion “in order to accommodate new ideas and shows.”

The Wicked Witch kicks things off tomorrow with a three-act bill featuring a range of industrial dance sounds and styles. BODYKIT is the side project of Whatever Brains frontman Rich Ivey and a major turn away from the punk stylings of his main band. The band celebrates the release of its debut full-length, No-NRG, a dubby, dissonant, but danceable set via New Body Tapes. They’ll be joined by Floor Model and Gar-ud, both of which relish chaotic beat manipulation.

Take a listen to the bands below, and be sure to check out this exciting new venue.

Reviews for "The Wucked Witch's Forgotten Victims: Raleigh's Untold Stories"

1. Emily - 1 star
I had high hopes for "Wucked Witch Raleigh" but I was sorely disappointed. The plot was confusing and hard to follow, and the pacing was all over the place. The characters lacked depth and I couldn't connect with any of them. The writing style was also quite amateurish, with numerous grammar and spelling errors throughout. Overall, I found this book to be a complete waste of time and would not recommend it to anyone.
2. John - 2 stars
"Wucked Witch Raleigh" was not my cup of tea. While I appreciate the author's attempt to create a unique and imaginative world, I found the execution to be lacking. The dialogue felt forced and unnatural, and the descriptive passages were overly verbose. Additionally, I found the protagonist, Raleigh, to be quite unlikeable and couldn't sympathize with her motivations. I struggled to finish this book and was ultimately left feeling unsatisfied.
3. Sarah - 2 stars
I found "Wucked Witch Raleigh" to be a disappointment. The concept seemed intriguing, but the execution fell flat. The writing style was choppy and inconsistent, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. The world-building was weak and lacked sufficient explanation, leaving me feeling confused and disconnected from the narrative. The characters, particularly Raleigh, lacked depth and their actions often seemed illogical. Overall, this book failed to live up to its potential and I would not recommend it.
