Studio 54–Inspired Makeup Is Trending—This Maximalist Brand Is My Secret Weapon

Welcome to The Great Beauty Try-On, where we seized the opportunity to test-drive the best-selling makeup products from some of your favorite beauty brands (plus some newcomers!) and documented the process along the way.

As a beauty editor, I've never shied away from bold makeup. Hot-pink eye shadow? Yes. Graphic winged liner? Sure. While I wouldn't necessarily wear these looks on a daily basis, I liked to experiment every so often, taking the time to apply intricate makeup for the sake of it. I'd wear it around the house while I answered emails or did chores, only to take it off a couple of hours later. For me, it was a fun way to flex my creativity. But somewhere along the way (or, more accurately, in the midst of the pandemic), I lost my maximalist makeup streak. The inspiration just wasn't there, so my most colorful makeup products sat in my drawer collecting dust.

That recently changed, and I have two things to thank for it: The first is TikTok. While it might be best known for minimalist makeup, there are plenty of content creators sharing maximalist makeup looks as well—many of which have a bold, disco-inspired aesthetic. As someone who's obsessed with anything even remotely Studio 54–inspired, I can't help but be inspired to create my own looks after seeing others on the internet.

The second (and most important) thing I have to thank is Half Magic Beauty, the makeup brand founded by Donni Davy, the award-winning makeup artist behind HBO's Euphoria. Just as fans of the show would expect, the brand is a kaleidoscopic collision of color and texture, and it totally reignited my love for look-at-me makeup. Keep scrolling to see my favorite products from the brand and the looks that I created with them.

As you can see, I jumped right in. With so many colorful products in front of me, I was too tempted to hold back. For the first look, I wanted to use one of my favorite color combinations: dark red and powder blue.

I was especially curious about the lip color, as I had heard so much about the brand's unique formula. It's called Mouth Cloud, and it's a soft matte lip cream that, according to people on the internet, offers all-day, non-drying color. I chose the darkest, vampiest one, which is called Edward's Fantasy (I sincerely hope that was a Twilight reference). I applied a couple of coats for the boldest color payoff. As someone who's prone to dry lips and creased lipstick, I appreciated how soft and comfortable the formula was. It didn't look or feel dry, and it even gave my lips a cool blurred effect.

I paired it with the brand's sky blue eye shadow single, which is called Daydreamies. Just like the lip color, the eye shadow was easy to build and shape. I was ecstatic about that color payoff.

The second look was all about the eyes. I used a liquid eye shadow that's somewhere between shimmer and glitter. Then, I applied a swipe of the brand's liquid eyeliner (which is insane, but more on that in a minute) and a few face gems for good measure.

As you can see, I jumped right in. With so many colorful products in front of me, I was too tempted to hold back. For the first look, I wanted to use one of my favorite color combinations: dark red and powder blue.

This accessibility has revolutionized the way people learn about makeup, as anyone with an internet connection can access these tutorials for free. In addition to tutorials, makeup YouTube channels also play a crucial role in product reviews and recommendations. Many content creators regularly share their thoughts on new beauty releases, offering their honest opinions on quality, performance, and value for money. This has proved invaluable for consumers who rely on these reviews to make informed purchasing decisions. Makeup YouTube has also given rise to a new genre of influencers known as beauty gurus. These individuals have gained a significant following by sharing their expertise and building a trusted reputation within the beauty community. Beauty gurus often collaborate with brands to create their own makeup collections or endorse products, further solidifying their influence and impact on consumer behavior. However, it's important to note that the makeup YouTube industry is not without its controversies. Some critics argue that the excessive focus on physical appearance and the unrealistic beauty standards portrayed in these videos can negatively impact viewers' self-esteem. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the authenticity of sponsored content and the potential influence brands have on creators' opinions. Despite these concerns, makeup YouTube continues to thrive, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch these creators and learn from their expertise. The platform has democratized the beauty industry, giving voices to individuals who may not have traditional platforms or access to mainstream media. It has also provided a space for beauty enthusiasts to connect, share tips, and build a supportive community. Ultimately, makeup YouTube has transformed the way we learn, explore, and appreciate the artistry of makeup..

Reviews for "The Evolution of Makeup Tutorials: How YouTube Changed the Beauty Industry"

1. Jennifer - 2 stars - The "With makeup youtube" channel was a huge disappointment for me. I expected to find useful tutorials and tips on how to apply makeup and create different looks, but all I got was a bunch of overly dramatic and exaggerated looks that no one in their right mind would wear in real life. The host of the channel seemed more interested in showing off their skills and creativity rather than actually providing helpful information. I was left feeling frustrated and utterly unimpressed.
2. Mark - 1 star - I couldn't even make it through one full video of "With makeup youtube." The host's constant talking and interruptions made it impossible to focus on the actual makeup application. It felt more like a reality TV show than an educational channel. The makeup looks themselves were way too extreme and unrealistic for everyday wear. I would not recommend wasting your time on this channel if you're looking for practical makeup tips.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - I stumbled upon the "With makeup youtube" channel hoping to find some new and interesting makeup techniques, but unfortunately, I was left feeling uninspired. The host's approach to makeup was all about transforming oneself into some sort of abstract art rather than enhancing natural beauty. It felt as if the channel was targeted towards professional artists rather than regular makeup enthusiasts. Overall, the content was not relatable or practical for someone looking to improve their everyday makeup skills.
4. Chris - 1 star - "With makeup youtube" was a complete letdown. The host came across as pretentious and self-absorbed. Instead of providing helpful tips and tricks, they spent most of the videos talking about themselves and their personal achievements. It felt like watching a self-promotion series rather than a makeup tutorial channel. I would not recommend this channel to anyone who is looking for authentic, down-to-earth content.
