Only a few times in my life have I found myself speechless – let me tell you about one of them.
I was eleven years old at the time, and my sister’s then boyfriend convinced us to go to a Mongolian barbecue place that was over half-an-hour away. We called him crazy. We mocked him. We made him drive.
Pulling up to Magic Grill, we expected the worst. It’s situated off of a main road, and the parking lot is small and janky. Magic Grill is the definition of a “hole-in-the-wall” place.
It’s also not a traditional restaurant. You don’t order a menu item and get served – instead, you sit down, and are asked “What soup? Dumplings?” Always ask for the rice dumplings.
Then, you go to the stir-fry bar. A plethora of options awaits you – meat, veggies, noodles, and more. Over the years I have experimented quite a bit with the choices at hand, and have decided that I am an advocate of a one-to-one, baby-corn-to-everything-else ratio.
Once you’re done piling on noodles and toppings, you move onto the sauce section – now, as a frequent flier of Magic Grill, the secret combination is 4-3-2-1-(skip)-1. If you take those quantities of spoonfuls of sauce into your bowl (moving down the sauces from right to left, or as you move towards the grill) you will achieve nirvana in noodle form.
Then, you hand your bowl to the stir fry chef, who cooks and mixes it up on a large grill. Then, he scoops it back into your bowl, and sends you on your way.

Since then, I have moved from New Jersey to Massachusetts, putting a regrettable amount of distance between me and Magic Grill. Every time I come back to New Jersey (for work, family, whatever) I build into my schedule some time to stop by for a big bowl of Mongolian barbecue.
In addition to the delicious food (which can be seen above), the staff is some of the friendliest I’ve met and they remember me every time. It definitely has a “family-business” vibe, willing to be welcoming to one and all.
I highly recommend making the journey to enjoy a bite!
