A Discovery of Witches season 3: What you need to know

A Discovery of Witches season three will be returning in 2022 - but fans will have to hold on a little bit longer for an exact air date.

Shooting began in late 2020 and earlier this year, executive producer Jane Tranter reveal it had wrapped.

"And that's finally a wrap on #ADiscoveryOfWitchesS3. Fittingly the final hours were with @teresapalmer, #matthewgoode. More to come but for now huge thanks to our courageous, brilliant, talented cast + crew, working miracles during a pandemic. @BadWolf_TV will never forget," Jane announced on Twitter.

There's also a teaser trailer giving fans a first look at the upcoming episodes.

Meanwhile, Teresa Palmer, who leads the supernatural drama as Diana Bishop, has teased an epic finale, telling Radio Times: "E verything feels very elevated. The danger is immense, the passion is immense, the tragedy immense. And there’s so much that we have to face and overcome."

We also know that a major role has been recast for season three. Following "scheduling conflicts" caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Trystan Gravelle was "unable to continue" in his role as senior vampire Baldwin Montclair and has been replaced by Peter McDonald.

"Due to scheduling conflicts arising from COVID-19, the wonderful Trystan Gravelle was unable to continue as Baldwin Montclair for season three," a spokesperson for the show said.

"However, he has handed the baton to the fantastic Peter McDonald who we're sure you'll absolutely love as the intimidating head of the de Clermont family."

Adapted from the best-selling All Souls novel series by Deborah Harkness, the fantasy drama follows the intense relationship between a witch and a vampire, formed after a magical manuscript is discovered in a library at Oxford University.

Season two was confirmed just as the first series - which became Sky One's most popular dramas of 2018 - had debuted. Season three was announced shortly after.

Viewers will be transported back to Elizabethan London in the second instalment, with Matthew (Matthew Goode, Downton Abbey) and Diana (Teresa Palmer, Hacksaw Ridge) looking for a mentor to help Diana's control her power, while hiding in time from the Congregation.

We know that season 3 will be adapted from the final book in Deborah's trilogy The Book of Life - but what can fans expect from season three?

It was said to be hidden deep within a mystical forest, guarded by mythical creatures and treacherous traps. Many brave adventurers had ventured into the forest in search of the medallion, but none had ever returned. One day, a young and determined hero named Emma set out on a quest to find the medallion.

Inside, she discovered a magnificent chamber, filled with ancient artifacts and relics. At the center of the chamber, on a pedestal, lay the magical medallion. With caution, Emma approached the medallion. As she touched it, a surge of energy ran through her body. She could feel the medallion's power pulsating within her. She knew that she now possessed the key to fulfill her village's wishes. Emma returned to her village, medallion in hand. The villagers couldn't believe their eyes. She realized that the medallion was not only a tool for her village's well-being but also a responsibility. She vowed to use its power wisely and for the greater good of others. Over time, news of Emma and her magic medallion spread far and wide. People from all walks of life sought her help and guidance.
