What is the Scarlet Witch? WandaVision's "Chaos Magic" reveal, explained

A key member of the Avengers for years, Wanda Maximoff has operated without a code name. All this time, the world has known her as "an Avenger named Wanda," and nothing more.

Well . that's changed now, hasn't it?

In WandaVision Episode 8, "Previously On," Wanda walks through the past. She and we see her history leading up to Westview, as well as Agatha Harkness' early days as well. The painful but cathartic trip through Wanda's memories ends with a huge reveal about Wanda: her hex power is actually "Chaos Magic," making her not just "Scarlet Witch," but "The Scarlet Witch." Here's what that all means.

In the comics, Wanda's backstory is a touchy subject. At first, she and her brother Pietro were the children of classic superhero Whizzer, then were revealed to actually be the mutant children of Magneto, who were adopted by Marya and Django Maximoff. In 2016, that backstory turned out to be false as well when Wanda realized she and her brother weren't mutants at all but results of experimentation by the High Evolutionary.

In the 2016 comic Scarlet Witch Vol 2 #4, Wanda goes on a journey much like the one she goes on in WandaVision Episode 8. Accompanied by the ghost of her mentor, Agatha Harkness, she seeks out the truth of her parentage and finds the spirit of her biological mother Natalya Maximoff, her adoptive father's sister. Wanda watches in confusion as she conquers a magical creature with her sorcery while dressed in Wanda's classic Scarlet Witch costume.

Wanda learns her true heritage with the spirit of Agatha Harkness.

Agatha explains that Wanda's moniker of "Scarlet Witch" is not just a nickname, but a legacy of magical people in her family that have all used the "Scarlet Witch" title. All this time, Wanda believed the name came to her fully formed, but in reality, it was part of her inheritance.

However, that doesn't explain why Agatha highlights Wanda's chaos magic at the end of WandaVision Episode 8. Chaos magic also has precedence in the comics, but not in connection with the long line of Scarlet Witches.

Wanda sees a Scarlet Witch-like figure when she gets her powers in Episode 8.

Marvel Entertainment

While Wanda's powers in the comics are a result of experimentation by the High Evolutionary on Mount Wundagore, inside the mountain lurks a horrible secret: the long-buried Elder God Chthon. Chthon affected a newborn Wanda giving her a fraction of his powers. That, combined with energy manipulation from the experimentation, resulted in fearsome, reality-warping magic.

It looks like WandaVision is going to combine these two comic storylines into one, where Wanda is next in a long line of Scarlet Witches, a pantheon of mystical sorcerers who can all use chaos magic. Whether this chaos magic comes from an Elder God or some being of MCU origin, Wanda is further proving herself to be much stronger than she first appeared.

WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+.

What I Heard: What’s Next for The Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff’s story until now has been foretold in part by the prophecy within the Darkhold. Her journey has taken her from Sokovia as a young girl who was experimented on by HYDRA to a powerful hero and Avenger. Her experiences in the MCU eventually made this prophecy come true, transforming Wanda into The Scarlet Witch.

Since the events of WandaVision , Wanda had lived in isolation, learning more about herself and the power she could harness through the Darkhold. However, the Darkhold exerted a heavy toll, corrupting our Wanda using her grief and love for her family to turn her into an antagonist by the time Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness rolled around. Thankfully, Wanda did what she could to redeem herself by the film’s end, sacrificing herself to destroy Wundagore Mountain and burn every Darkhold from across the multiverse.

Since then, fans have been curious about what is next for the Scarlet Witch in the MCU. In today’s article, we’re going to tackle some of the most frequently asked questions from fans, discuss some of the various rumors that have been making the rounds out there, and share what we’ve heard about what is next for The Scarlet Witch.

Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch/Wanda (Marvel/Disney)

Her powers are derived from her mutant abilities, making her one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. Throughout her comic book history, Scarlett Witch has been a member of various superhero teams, including the Avengers and the X-Men. She has often been portrayed as a complex character with a tragic backstory.

Wanda Maximoff-616

Let’s start by addressing the biggest elephant in the room; Did Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) survive the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? The simple answer is yes . Our Wanda is still alive in the main 616 Universe. The next question that usually follows is where she is. Some speculate that Wanda is still hidden in the rubble of Wundagore Mountain, while others have pointed to her spirit hiding out in the Multiverse.

Here’s what we’ve been told. Sources have informed us that Wanda Maximoff is currently in a dormant state at the end of The Witches’ Road. The Witches’ Road is an alternate dimension within the borders of the known universe, similar to that of the Mirror Dimension or the Dark Dimension.

According to sources, fans can expect this particular plane of existence to be first introduced in the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos series, followed by a potential special based on the location, which would premiere following the conclusion of Coven of Chaos. This “Witches’ Road” special, we’ve been told, would be similar to the Werewolf By Night special presentation in terms of tone and loose connectivity to the main MCU storyline.

Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) in ‘WandaVision’ (Marvel/Disney+)

However, just because the Witches’ Road will be introduced in these upcoming projects now doesn’t mean Wanda will appear in either one. Sources have stated that the Scarlet Witch will not physically appear in the previously stated projects.

The “Witches’ Road” special will mainly be an origin story of the mythical location, featuring a new cast of witches, and according to sources, will predate most of the events of the MCU. The most fans can expect from these projects regarding Wanda would be in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, with the confirmation that she is still alive via her trace of chaos magic, which is very faint and fading following the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What happens next following that discovery is something that will be explored in the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos series, set to premiere sometime in the second half of 2024.

Scralett witch

Her powers have been both a blessing and a curse, as they have caused her to lose control at times and inadvertently cause chaos. This has led to her being portrayed as both a hero and a villain throughout different storylines. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Witch has been portrayed as a member of the Avengers. She first appeared in the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and has since been a central character in movies such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. Her character arc has been closely tied to her relationship with her brother, Quicksilver, and her romantic relationship with Vision. Overall, Scarlett Witch is a complex and powerful character in the Marvel universe. Her abilities and struggles have made her a fan-favorite and a key player in many comic book storylines. Both in the comics and on the big screen, she continues to evolve, leaving fans intrigued about what her future holds..
