Tyler, The Creator – New Magic Wand (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“New Magic Wand” is the 6th track on Tyler, The Creator’s latest fifth studio album ‘IGOR‘ released on May 17, 2019.

‘IGOR’ narrates the different experiences of Tyler going through romantic interests. From the second track to the last, the album takes a full circle of falling in and out of love, and each song acts as a plot in this life-long, and rather bitter, journey. “New Magic Wand” is an insight into the brutality of the human mind when it comes to love. This song is also a collaboration with A$AP Rocky, although not officially credited.

Throughout the album, Tyler also manifests himself as the character of ‘Igor’ appearing in many Gothic horror flicks as a hunchbacked and deformed person.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “New Magic Wand”

Intro

The intro statement of the song is a sample from The Carmichael Show. However, it’s roots go back to old proverbs which means that to create a new opportunity/beginning, you might have to close down an existing one.

Verse 1

In the first verse of “New Magic Wand,” Tyler explains the background to his situation. Tyler has a partner and he is struggling to keep this relationship awake. We understand the singer’s mentality in these lyrics as he explains how jealous he gets of seeing a photograph of his partner with a girl-possibly an ex-girlfriend. He wants her ‘out of the picture’ which has a double entendre here; one, for removing her from the photograph, second; killing her.

The remark for ‘green eyes’ could be symbolic for emotions such as ‘jealousy’ and ‘envy’ to make him only his.

Refrain

The refrain performed by A$AP Rocky, is a perfect continuation from the first verse. Seemingly harmless lyrics have a murderous intent underneath.

“Magic Wand” is a tool used in the popular photo editing software Adobe Photoshop, and this tool is used to highlight something within a photograph before making changes to that specific highlighted area. In the first verse, Tyler says that he needs to remove the girl from the picture. Hence, a magic wand tool would be a good option.

However, since the first verse also alludes that Tyler would want to ‘remove her out of the picture’ which is slang for killing someone, magic wand may also be symbolic for a gun. A new gun may be his requirement now.

Verse 2

In the second verse of “New Magic Wand,” Tyler further establishes that he needs his partner all to himself, and not even a girl in an old photograph can share him.

The ‘spectrum’ in reference could be the ‘autism spectrum‘ which Tyler has talked about before, or the sexuality spectrum, which Tyler could be identifying himself as a homosexual.

The third verse and the bridge also talk about how she is going to be “dead” and even “evaporated,” which speaks to how much envy Tyler has bottling up inside him.

Verse 4

The fourth and last verse goes into more details on the complex emotions attached with jealousy, envy and love. But Tyler also tries to tell us that his green eyes are not a reflection of these emotions, but rather his natural colours.

Tyler also mentions Janis Joplin, a distinguished singer known for her high-powered folk-rock, psychedelia and blues music in the 1960s. She is known for pouring out her emotions on her songs.

The last lines of the fourth verse are quite alarming as Tyler describes a break-in and “getting the job done.” One thing to note is that Tyler does not want to wear a face mask to conceal his identity. Maybe he thinks that this life is his right–his 100% is his right.

New Magic Wand – Tyler, The Creator

“I need to get her out the picture / She’s really fuckin’ up my frame / She’s not developed like we are.” Hmm, those are some truly intriguing lyrics from Tyler, The Creator. Tyler has been the poster child of controversy many times throughout his career. His homophobic rhymes were quite offensive early on, but then, he would drop hints about his own sexuality. After opening up about sexuality on his Grammy-nominated 2017 album Flower Boy, his 2019 follow-up, IGOR, continues to find him referencing it. Specifically, on the song at hand, “New Magic Wand,” Tyler seems to be trying to sort things out regarding his relationship.

The aforementioned lyrical excerpt finds Tyler, the Creator affirming a relationship or at least the desire of a relationship with another male. He does so without ‘coming out’ explicitly, much like on Flower Boy, yet on the second verse, he also teases listeners: “My brother said I’m on the spectrum.” No, his brother wasn’t specifically referencing the purported sexual spectrum/sexual fluidity, but in the context of the love saga that’s being constructed, the rapper seems to be pushing the envelope. That saga is pretty simple: Tyler wants this man all to himself yet there is a woman involved – his partner’s girlfriend (or ex-, depending on how you read into it).

“New Magic Wand” is confusing to a degree but essentially, Tyler, the Creator seems to be atoning for sexuality in all its complexity. He also, in the process, shows that sexuality is by no means ‘cut and dry.’ He wants a committed relationship, yet, a woman (“She’s not developed like we are”) stands in the way. Tyler wants to use his ‘magic wand’ – likely a gun – to kill her: “She’s gonna be dead, I just got a magic wand / We can finally be together.” It’s a totally unreasonable assertion mind you, but what isn’t unreasonable is his, or an LGBTQ+ person’s desire for a legitimate relationship without inhibition.

“New Magic Wand” by Tyler, the Creator

Tyler, the Creator is undoubtedly a polarizing figure in the world of hip-hop. On one hand he has suffered criticism in the past due to being labeled “homophobic”. On the other, some factions of hip-hop fandom have long recognized him as being gay himself. The reason this subject even comes up is because the way the lyrics of “New Magic Want” are termed, it is not clear if he is rapping to a man or a woman. Or put more precisely, the song is addressed to a romantic interest who is either a lesbian or a gay male.

Why do we say so?

That is because the whole song is centered on Tyler being upset with his partner for dating a woman. He instead wants the individual’s undivided attention. Interestingly enough, he never uses gender pronouns to specify his lover’s sex, thus lending to the aforementioned speculations.

What is “New Magic Wand”?

How the term “new magic wand” plays into the song is that it is an object the rapper apparently possesses. What it is exactly is not mentioned. However, he is using it to appeal to his lover to focus exclusively on him while forsaking the other woman. He also states “like magic, gone”, so perhaps this device alludes to his inclination to terminate the romance if the aforementioned demands are not met.

It is also possible that the “magic wand” refers to different objects at different junctures of the song. For instance, in the third verse while threatening to kill his lover’s girlfriend he refers to it, which may insinuate it is a gun or some sort of weapon.

Conclusion

Ultimately what can be conclusively ascertained from this song is that Tyler, the Creator is deeply in love with the person he is addressing. For instance, he expresses a desire to one day marry him or her. However, he is also insanely jealous of the woman this person is dating. So he is basically forcing this individual to choose between him and this other woman.

Reviews for "Ranni the Witch Plush: A Magical Companion for Bedtime Stories"

1. Emily - 1/5 stars
I was really disappointed with the "Ranni the witch plush". The quality of the plush was very poor, with loose threads and cheap fabric that ripped easily. The stitching was also poorly done, and within days of having it, the seams started to come apart. Additionally, the plush had a strange smell that did not go away even after washing it. I expected much better for the price I paid, and I would not recommend this plush to anyone.
2. Daniel - 2/5 stars
While I had high hopes for the "Ranni the witch plush", I was ultimately let down. The design of the plush was cute and whimsical, but the material used felt rough and uncomfortable to touch. The stuffing also felt lumpy and unevenly distributed, making it uncomfortable to hold or cuddle. I appreciate the effort in creating a unique design, but the poor execution in terms of materials makes it hard for me to fully enjoy this plush.
3. Jessica - 3/5 stars
I have mixed feelings about the "Ranni the witch plush". On one hand, I appreciate the attention to detail in the design and the vibrant colors used. The size of the plush was also good, not too big or small. However, I found the stuffing to be quite firm, making the plush feel stiff and less huggable. Additionally, a few of the stitches on the plush were already loose when I received it, which is concerning for a brand-new product. Overall, while it has some positives, there are definitely improvements that could be made to enhance the overall quality and comfort of this plush.
4. Brian - 2/5 stars
I didn't have a great experience with the "Ranni the witch plush". The material used for the plush was not very soft and felt scratchy against the skin. The colors on the plush were also much duller and less vibrant than advertised. Furthermore, the limbs of the plush were not securely attached and felt like they could easily come off. Overall, I was not impressed with the quality of this plush and would not recommend it.
