But then he saw her actual potential to be better than him, he shut that down and patronized her attempts so she d never be tempted to pick up a sword again.

answered:Hmmm, headcanons for Roland…I’ve come to realize I often imagine his parents being out of the picture, that he was raised by his grandmother or an aunt, who spilled him rotten and let him grow up without facing the consequences of his actions.
I think he was always a very good looking child who truly did dream of being a dashing hero, only that got twisted and corrupted. He no longer wanted to be a hero because it was the right thing to be, but because heroes got glory and power.
I don’t think he’s ever truly been in love with anyone at all. He likes the idea of having someone beautiful on his arm, but his happy ending is him with power and nothing and no one to take that away from him.
He’s an honestly good fighter, though he pales in comparison to Marianne and Bog. I imagine that when he was courting her, Marianne eagerly wanted to learn how to fight from him, and Roland agreed, thinking it would be harmless, that a Princess fighting was just too ludicrous. But then he saw her actual potential to be better than him, he shut that down and patronized her attempts so she’d never be tempted to pick up a sword again.
