The mascot of the University of Mississippi, commonly referred to as Ole Miss, has been a subject of ongoing controversy and debate. The school's official mascot has historically been "Colonel Reb," a caricature of a white southern plantation owner. Colonel Reb, with his grey beard and Confederate army uniform, has long been associated with the Old South and the racial divisions it represents. The Landshark, a term popularized by the university's football team, won the majority vote and became the official mascot. It is depicted as a sleek and fierce shark, often seen with the school's colors of navy blue and red. The Landshark has since been embraced by fans and students alike as the official symbol of Ole Miss.
