He lives in upstate New York. John’s favorite published crossword is his three-page centerfold for Golf Digest featuring pictures of past US Open winners. John’s puzzles have appeared in unconventional settings: on cereal boxes, a rock band’s album cover, and the side of a three-story brick building. A jigsaw puzzle for US Congress members, a crossword in the shape of the H. J. Heinz keystone logo, and another in the shape of an Absolut Vodka bottle were memorable design challenges. John has been honored to construct special birthday puzzles for Lee Iacocca, F. I found the old Apple Jacks mascot to be incredibly annoying and off-putting. The design was dated and didn't resonate with me at all. The character's constant yelling and over-the-top behavior made me cringe every time I saw a commercial. I couldn't understand why the company stuck with such an obnoxious mascot for so long. I'm glad they've finally moved on to something better.

The old Apple Jacks mascot was just plain weird. It seemed like they were trying too hard to be edgy and different, but it came across as forced and confusing. The character's odd appearance and excessive energy didn't add any value to the brand or the product. Plus, the commercials featuring the mascot were always too loud and in-your-face. I couldn't enjoy my breakfast with that kind of noisy distraction. I'm glad they decided to revamp their mascot and bring something more relatable to the table.
