Chapter 128: Woeful Workloads

Kat stood in front of the crowd of women she had standing in rows that reached all the way down to the other side of the courtyard, her hands clasped behind her back as she eyed them all shifting uncomfortably.

She had insisted that they all wore trousers and tunics for the occasion, and they all looked completely ill at ease in the clothes.

Kat resisted smiling.

Soon. Soon you will all see how wonderful pants are. I will convert you all… To the way of pants…

“I think this is everyone. Do you know what you would like to start with?” Sir Cas strode up to join Kat’s side, and peered out over the young women.

Half of the courtyard was designated to the women’s training, and there had even been screens erected to stop the men leering at them indecently, which Kat admitted was most likely for the better as she stared at the sea of nervous faces, save for one.

Dana stood in the front row, and smiled shyly at Sir Cas.

The knight cleared his throat and nodded back.

“Thank you.”

Sir Cas turned to look at the redhead in confusion.

“When Faucher finds out his daughter signed up to learn self-defense I’ll need something to distract him from killing me. Bringing up how Dana is still very much so interested in you is perfect for that.”

Sir Cas raised an eyebrow, his expression tensing.

His reaction made Kat hesitate. “Wait… do you like her back?”

The knight dropped his chin wearily. “I’m trying to avoid hurting her.”

Kat cringed. “Oh… Poor girl. That’s even worse. Pull the arrow out before it gets worse. Sir Cas, the longer you don’t deal with it, the worse it will get.”

Sir Cas slowly turned to face her directly. “I sincerely hope you know how ridiculous a statement that is coming from you of all people.”

“Oy. I’m happily married now. You can’t say crap about me anymore!”

The blond knight smiled and shook his head before looking back to the young women who still were waiting on them expectantly in the wintry chill.

“What are we going to teach them first?”

“Maybe start working on their endurance? Young noblewomen like them probably don’t have much strength. What do you think? Have them run laps, then maybe attempt a push up or two?”

Sir Cas shook his head. “Remember, they are learning self-defense, not training to become soldiers.”

Kat let out a soft grumble. “Well some of them I think want to learn swordsmanship… How about this? We split them into groups. We’ll just see who wants to try the harder stuff, and that group we’ll assume intends to try training and learning more seriously.”

Sir Cas thought about the idea, tilting his head back and forth as he did so. “Sounds good. Which group would you like to take?”

“I want the ones who’ll try the hardest of course.”

Sir Cas chuckled. “I suppose that makes the most sense… You haven’t ever gone easy with your training.”

Kat grinned, then turned to face the women while placing her hands on her hips.

“Alright everyone! Those of you who don’t know, this here is Sir Cas! He will be helping me teach you all today with the blessing of His Majesty the king! We would like to split you all into two groups! Those of you who wish to simply learn a few defensive moves, will organize yourselves in front of Sir Cas, and those of you who wish to try and build your strength and endurance to eventually learn more advanced techniques, will line up similar to how you are in front of me!”

The group of women broke out in demure whispers.

Kat leaned back over to Sir Cas. “In Daxaria this courtyard would be in absolute chaos by this point with all the women.”

The knight nodded with a smile. “My sisters would be climbing the walls.”

It took a bit of time, but eventually there were two distinct groups that had formed.

Surprisingly, while Kat’s group was smaller than Sir Cas’s it wasn’t by as large a margin as they had predicted.

Even more surprising yet, Lady Selene Icarus was in Kat’s group.

Selene even stood in the front row beside Dana. However, Kat could tell from her haughty expression that she was there for the sake of being difficult.

Kat did her best to not get too excited over all the things she was going to make the noblewoman do…

“Alright, everyone, first thing’s first, you’re all weak as kittens, so I want you to do thirty laps around the courtyard.”

Thirty ?” Dana exclaimed before pressing her lips shut again when she realized she’d accidentally spoken aloud.

“Ah… too much? Apologies. Not sure what’s normal for other people… Fifteen it is!” Kat cheered happily and pointed to the edge of the courtyard.

Most of the women exchanged apprehensive glances, but began to gradually sidle over to the edge of their designated space to start running.

Dana was the only one who darted there excitedly and instantly began jogging around the courtyard. Seeing her enthusiasm, a few of the noblewomen started to abandon their hesitations about the task, and instead focused on the fifteen laps.

Lady Selene, however, strolled up to Kat, her arms crossed, and her chin raised imperiously.

Say what she could about the woman’s intelligence, Kat had to admonish that the Troivackian noblewoman definitely knew how to wield her presence.

I’ll run the thirty laps. Once Prince Eric sees that you aren’t that special, you should start counting your days as his wife.”

Kat had to purse her mouth to stop herself from laughing.

Damn… the woman was funny.

Not that she was aware of the fact, but she was.

Here I was thinking that I would have to tease her a bit, but she just does it all to herself. I have complete faith that Dana was right that thirty laps was too much, so… let’s see how this goes.

With her tongue poking the inside of her cheek, Kat nodded along to what the noblewoman said.

“Sure, sure. Sounds like a fantastic plan. Off you go!” she was able to say with what she hoped to be an encouraging smile.

“Just so you know, I could also easily do this while dressed looking proper !” Selene cast back cooly over her shoulder as she walked away.

Kat let out a soft whimper as she tried not to burst out laughing yet again.

At the rate she was going, the redhead was going to have bruised ribs just from trying to contain herself when conversing with Duke Icarus’s daughter.

After a moment, Kat let out a sigh, forcing her emotions to settle back down as she watched Lady Selene start to run, her long chocolate colored hair only partially tied back, and already becoming entangled in the wind.

“Aah, this is turning out to be a good day.”

Fin sat in the king’s office, his blue eyes glinting as he stared at none other than Mr. Kraft.

His father’s former assistant.

“It is good to see you again, Your Grace,” the coven leader greeted with a bow.

“I hear things are rather dire for witches here in Troivack, Mr. Kraft,” Fin responded frostily.

The coven leader bowed his head. “Yes, they are.”

Fin leaned back in his seat. “I also hear you have been running tests on Witch’s Brew to see if you can learn more about it.”

“Yes, Your Grace.”

“And you’ve been running these tests in a secret location with the mage who is petitioning Troivack’s court to become the first official Royal Mage in the last twenty some odd years since the Tri-War.”

“That is also true.”

“Where are these tests being run?” Fin asked while holding Mr. Kraft’s gaze.

“That is a private location that His Majesty has permitted to be left a secret.”

“I will be asking to meet with those who are running these tests,” the duke proceeded to inform Mr. Kraft tonelessly.

“That… I can understand why you may wish to, Your Grace, however-”

“My familiar, Kraken, has information regarding the drug that could be helpful. While I have yet to ask His Majesty about this matter, please prepare for me to join you come tomorrow morning.”

Fin stood up as Mr. Kraft opened his mouth, presumably to object.

However, the look the redhead gave him had him clamping his mouth shut.

After saying his piece, Fin took his leave of the office that the king had graciously allowed the two men to use for the sake of privacy, and decided to make his way down to the training grounds to see his daughter.

The house witch knew he still owed Eric an apology, but the prince had slept in, and by the time he was up, Fin had already started working on a plan of action regarding the son of the Gods…

However, there was still the concerning matter of Likon.

After suggesting that the young man take time to come to terms with his feelings, Fin had not seen hide nor hair of him, and it was making the duke concerned.

He let out a long breath while descending the last of the stairs to the first floor.

There were so many things he needed to do to try and keep everyone– his daughter in particular– safe. Ever since receiving the letter from the Troivackian king about Kat facing the devil and Eric’s abduction, the words of the gods rang in his ears…

“A child of yours saves a being very dear to us.”

Back then the hint had been perplexing, but now they were terrifying.

Just what could Kat do to save a being they cared about? Was that being the devil? Or was it someone else?

With his thoughts spiraling further and further down into the familiar abyss that was a parent’s woes, Fin grew blind to his surroundings, and consequently almost didn’t see Eric, who stood in front of him, though the prince didn’t notice him either.

Staring at the future king and halting in his tracks, Fin observed the way Eric had his head tilted, the way his gaze had turned soft as he stared out the castle doorway, and without needing to look or ask, found he already knew what the reason for such an expression was.

Fin’s heart broke a little, but he smiled.

His daughter had found someone who loved her the way he’d wished someone would.

Swallowing past the lump in his throat and blinking back tears, Fin stowed his hands in his pockets and finished his journey up to the prince.

“Afternoon,” the duke greeted before turning to look out at the courtyard that he discovered was divided in half.

“Hi,” Eric returned, snapping out of his trance.

Fin regarded the outdoor scene, and observed that there were two groups of women. The ones who were running, and the ones that Sir Cas was instructing in farthest corner of their space from the main doorway to the castle

He watched quietly as his daughter would occasionally shout encouraging words to the young women, or correct their running forms. Every single one of her group was sweating and gasping for breath; some had already been forced to walk the remaining laps she had assigned to them as their lungs protested too much against the activity.

“Looks like she has a good number of women here,” Fin mused.

“Mm,” the prince responded noncommittally.

“Eric, I’m sorry.”

Fin looked at his former friend who stared back at him emotionlessly for a moment before letting out a sigh of resignation.

“I know you are. I’m still not your biggest fan anymore, but…” he paused, molding the words in his mouth before releasing them. “We are family now.”

Surprising the prince, Fin smiled in response. “That’s more than I deserve, I think, at this time, but I’ll take it.”

“Look, I do understand you’ve had a lot of responsibilities on your plate since becoming ennobled, and really, it is well established that you only ever wanted to cook and just got this far to please your wife.”

Fin nodded, still grinning as he watched his daughter.

“I see where you were coming from when you made your decision about me, it’s just with more recent events that I- Why are you smiling?” Eric asked irritably.

Blinking and giving his head a shake, Fin closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Right. Sorry… I just… it really did just dawn on me that you’ll be returning to Daxaria and announcing to your court that we’re officially related by marriage.”

“And?”

“Between Mr. Howard and Lord Fuks I couldn’t help but wonder who’d have the better reaction.”

Eric stared at Fin.

He tried to fight off the laugh that burbled up in his chest, but he couldn’t help it, he succumbed to the humor and dropped his face to his hand.

“Alina has already offered me a substantial amount of gold to have his expression painted when he finds out. Truthfully? I’m convinced she only accepted our marriage because of Mr. Howard’s pending reaction.”

Fin laughed harder.

Eric kept trying to regain control but found he simply couldn’t help it. It felt too good to be able to laugh with Fin again…

“Oh Gods… I bet you three gold he quits on the spot,” Fin gasped while wiping his eyes.

“I’ll bet you five that he shouts a lot first.”

“Mm… I don’t know. I could see him more just stalking out of the room and straight to the wine cellars.”

“Well, then I guess we have a bet,” Eric offered his hand to Fin, and after giving it a meaningful glance, the house witch clasped it, and gave it a firm shake.

While the duke still felt as though he were drowning in worries, at the very least things were starting to look up when it came to his relationship with Eric Reyes, and that was no small matter.

So, the two men continued watching Katarina coach the young women who had unfortunately fallen under her command, both silently cheering her on, and both content with the company they shared.

That is until Fin leaned over, and whispered, “Eric, you like a giiiiirl.”
