You've probably seen it perched above Franklin Avenue and have always wondered what kind of mystifying acts take place within the walls of this Victorian chateau. If you're an out of towner, this just might land on your list of places to visit in L.A. But if you're a local, it's a right of passage to becoming a true Angeleno. So whether you're going for the bar, restaurant or magic, here's our guide to this exclusive club.

What is it?

The Magic Castle is a private magic clubhouse in Hollywood that offers magic shows, dining experiences and séances to their members. The club first opened its doors in 1963, but the Victorian building dates back to 1908.

Where is it?

The Magic Castle is located at 7001 Franklin Ave in Hollywood. It’s one block north of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When is the Magic Castle open?

The Magic Castle is open daily from 5pm-2am. Weekend brunch is Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm. The venue may be open, but the magic schedule may have different times.

How can I get in?

There are actually a number of ways to get into the Castle even if you’re not a member, which you can find here. The venue is 21 and over, except during weekend brunch.

How much does it cost?

Members can enter anytime without paying an entrance fee. The same goes for up to five guests entering with a member; additional guests must pay. The admission fee if you manage to get an invite is $20 Monday through Thursday and $30 Friday through Sunday, which does not include the cost of dinner, which is required and can bring the cost upwards of $75 per person.

What do I wear?

The evening dress code is strict and requires all visitors to dress in business attire or evening wear that is conservative and formal. Suit and tie is the best bet for men, but full turtlenecks, ascots, banded collars, bows and bolo ties are also acceptable. For women, a cocktail dress or pant suit is perfect. Country club casual is the dress code for brunch attendees. Be sure to snap a photo of your fancy outfit before heading inside because there are no photos allowed at the Magic Castle. What magicians will I see?

There’s a rotating list of magicians that perform at the Magic Castle. To find out who will be performing when, check out the Magic Castle’s website. You could even meet Houdini himself during the Magic Castle's special Houdini Séance. After a dinner (and bottomless wine), a medium will summon the other side and invite some spirits to your little gathering.

How do I see a show?

Magic is always taking place at the Castle, with shows happening as often as every 45 mins. As you make your way through the castle, you’ll see magicians set up at tables throughout the property. There are also five venues feauturing close-up magic, stage performers, illusionists and more. The Palace of Mystery is the largest venue (130 seats) and the only ticketed show. The only way to snag a seat is by dining at the restaurant. After dinner you will get a ticket to show. The Parlour of Prestidigitation, Close-Up Gallery, Peller Theatre and W.C. Fields Bar offer a more intimate magic experience.

Any tips or tricks?

Some of the best magic happens at the bars, and no we're not talking about the delicious drinks being made. Some of the best magicians at the club are behind the bars. Also, be sure to plan out your night and get to your desired shows early or else you may miss the best magicians!

Magic Castle

Otherwise, people can only attend if they get a special guest pass from a member of the Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. The Academy is a non-profit organization that devotes itself to the advancement of magic.

The Magic Castle is basically a private clubhouse for magicians and the magically-inclined. It first opened its doors in 1963 and has been going strong ever since. The Castle has a strict elegant dress code–although the attire is a bit more relaxed for brunch versus dinner. Not only do you need a special guest pass but there is also an admission fee and a meal cost. I attended a weekend brunch (which is the only time that those under twenty-one are allowed on the premises, so I saw lots of families).

The secrets of performing magicians are tightly kept, so there wasn’t any photography allowed beyond the main entrance and front room. In the lobby, you enter the mystical indoors only by uttering a password (which frequently changes) to sneak through a secret bookcase.

The Castle has three theaters (during brunch), where magic is performed: the Parlour of Prestidigitation, the Close-up Gallery, and the Palace of Mystery.

At brunch, the Parlour of Prestidigitation offers friendly-family entertainment. We had an endearing magician who really got a lot of audience participation, and it was fun watching the kids help with the magic. I even got a wonderful treat to sit down at a table outside of the Parlour and participate in a card trick. Special thanks to David for letting me enjoy some extra magic during my visit!

When I went, the Close-up Gallery featured an amazing Junior Magician (those between thirteen and twenty who show exceptional talent and are inducted in the club by auditioning before a committee). I loved how quick he was and the way he integrated new ways of doing magic, including a cell phone trick.

The Palace of Mystery is the main stage area where larger feats of magic are introduced. It was a very entertaining show done by Eric Buss–he even used a looper (a musical device that records and repeats sounds and phrases) in his act.

Overall, I really loved my visit to the Magic Castle. And I still have no idea how any of the tricks were done, but I enjoyed just getting transported and being in awe of everything around me.

P.S. Some extra areas of fun were the invisible piano player, Irma, who’s located on the main floor. You can request a song, and the piano will play from its wide repertoire. I also got crammed into a telephone booth near the Parlour; the phone rings and when picked up, there’s a darkened display to the side that lights up with a skeleton embedded in it!

The Magic Castle has a long and colorful history, but only invited guests may enter. It is one of the last great hold outs for style, class , and grace in an otherwise dance club filled Hollywood.

Most friendly staff , Alex the Bartender at the first bar makes the best Blood Orange Margarita !! The tour Ben gave us as first time visitors was mind blowing with historical magic performance facts!

On my first visit, I almost went the whole night without making it to the basement level. It's where some of the most intimate magic happens.

Be sure to get there early and explore the mansion. Spend some time with Invisible Irma at the piano. She can play almost any song requested. Answer the phone in the phone booth for another surprise.

The staff here are amazing - best customer service I've seen in a long time. Also the best smelling lobby, with free hot apple cider 24/7 during the holiday season!

Have some drinks to relax your mind. Don't try to figure it out, just be entertained. Do not miss the close up magic rooms. That's where your mind will kick into overdrive but don't let it.

The Magic is second to none - though it's a very old school style of magic. Drink prices are high but expected I suppose considering they're selling it as an "exclusive" experience.

The most friendly hotel in LA. Free snacks and sodas . Free wifi . DVDs to borrow. Cool small pool. Huge comfy suites. Not to be missed.

They have both a vegan and vegetarian special available! Just ask at the bar what the special is of the evening, and you can order it there or in the restaurant !

This club is the global epicenter of magic. If you are ready for an extraordinary experience, go for it — if you are able to get in.

Get in line early for the non ticket shows so you will get a good sit. In the Palace of mystery avoid sitting in the from row to the right, because you will miss some of the magic

I've never been to any other place like this. You'll experience magic everywhere - in places and at times you might not expect. :)

You have to really be into magic. And formality . Not a place to go if you're seeking diversity. It is, however, the place to go if you're seeking a good piece of flourless chocolate cake .

Just in case the magic made you ravenous, you can order from the full menu at any bar in the Castle .

Shows were awesome! But food is far from amazing. Everything over cooked or had no flavor. Great shows and drinks. Definitely not the food.
