10 Norman restaurants you need to try now

Norman, like many university cities, has some iconic eating and drinking spots, but it also has lesser known options that are absolutely worth your time. Here are 10 Norman Restaurants to Try Now.

Photos by Scotty O’Daniel.

Blu, 201 S. Crawford Ave.

This is the kind of restaurant that just belongs in a university town: quirky, fun, a sly sense of humor, good food, a diverse menu, an affordable and approachable wine list, a great bar program, patio dining and brunch. Blu is everything from special events with friends to a neighborhood watering hole to a date-night dinner.

El Huevo Mexi-Diner, 3522 24th Ave. NW

This brunch concept on Norman’s northern edge opened in 2019 and was immediately popular for good reason: the food is excellent. Someone needed to combine traditional brunch food with Tex-Mex favorites, and El Huevo nails the fusion. It also has one of the 405’s best chicken sandwiches.

Gourmet Donut, 518 N. Porter Ave.

This was one of the most common answers we got when we reached out for recommendations in Norman last year. A doughnut shop? Yes, and like any doughnut shop, it should be judged on the quality of its glazed doughnut. This one is magnificent.

Juan del Fuego, 223 34th Ave. SW

Norman seems to be the epicenter of awesome Mexi-Diners — Juan del Fuego was one of the first and remains one of the best. Its regular breakfast items like eggs, bacon and pancakes are better than standard diners, but the tamales and eggs are wonderful.

Magic Noodle, 1915 Classen Blvd.

The pandemic ended our hopes of having fresh, hand-pulled noodles at Magic Noodle on Classen in OKC, but you can still get the original in Norman. The menu has grown a bit over the years and now includes Singapore noodles, while the OG beef noodle soup is still a must.

Mamaveca, 2551 Hemphill Dr.

You’re really here for the Peruvian food, even though its Mexican options are well done, too. The litmus test for all Pervuian restaurants is the huancaína sauce, which Mamaveca delivers with the papa a la huancaína — a staple Peruvian dish featuring potatoes in the rich sauce. It also features lunch specials and an excellent lomito saltado.

The Meating Place, 121 E. Main St.

A barbecue joint with an excellent bar program? It’s a unicorn, really. The food is very good — definitely try the Cuban — and the big plus is a well-crafted, creative cocktail menu that just makes the experience better.

Midway Deli, 601 W. Eufaula St.

Locally owned sandwich shops are too rare, and so is a sandwich that features turkey with pepperoni. Go to Midway, get The Vulcan, experience bliss. The sandwiches are built around creativity, interesting combinations and fresh ingredients.

Pepe Delgados, 786 Asp Ave.

This is that place that all the locals love but people outside the area don’t know well. It has Tex-Mex as well as a variety of traditional, regional Mexican cuisine, and you have to have the enchiladas with mole.

Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails, 132 W. Main St.

Technically, Brady Sexton’s Main Street hot spot is one we wouldn’t need to mention, but the addition of Chef Luke Frye to the kitchen has made this local favorite even better. Check out his weekly specials, and definitely get the burger at some point.

We had a great experience at the Norman, OK location. Great food options . variety of noodles . good amount of protein in the dishes we chose. Vegetables were crisp and fresh. Very considerate manager and staff.

Great place and the service is friendly and attentive. I ate the original shrimp with noodles. The shrimp was excellent and the noodles were just that noodles no flavor. But I was able to add soy, mustard, and chili sauces out of the packets to make it palatable.

It has been several months since I visited Peiwei and I am very sorry to say that the quality of the always delicious Thai Dynamite Chicken has entirely disappeared. I was there at 5 pm last Saturday and I was the only customer. The chicken was cheap brown meat, the vegetables were almost nonexistent, the rice was dry and of cheap quality. The sauce was barely enough to taste. Please change your quality or you will not be in business for long. You have been my favorite Asian restaurant for many years and I am so very sad to see what has happened to you.

I got the lettuce wraps today and YUCK! First, as you can see in the photos my lettuce was far from fresh and more than one bite was nothing but chicken fat or tendon. The crispy dumplings I had were better for sure. The meal also tasted very salty, my fortune cookie was ok.

My only complaint is with the online ordering. We select curbside & instructions state to park in the curbside parking & to text with the name & number of the spot we're parked in. Then they'll bring our order to us. We order this way because I am disabled & have to limit my walking. Twice now, I arrive & park, then text them the info. I sat there for 10+ minutes waiting for someone to bring my order curbside & end up having to go in & get it myself. I understand they may be short staffed, but whatever the case may be, if actual curbside isn't available don't give us the option to use it. The food is always great, but until this situation is properly resolved I cannot give them 5 stars.

Service was perfect! From order to delivery. The place is super clean. Great easy going music and spacious seating area. The food . The new Thia Curry is pretty basic. It's good for what it is but lacks that great punch of flavor you get for an actual Thia place. I ordered a large edamame. STAY away from this item! This is a HUGE rip off. Less than 40 pods with most being 2 beans or less. I did check with the server and she confirmed it was a large. That's a disappointment. Egg rolls ehhh they're ok, spring rolls were deep fried which seemed strange, The pad thia has changed. They bread and deep fry the tofu, noodles and sauce are different. Not impressed with those changes. In a pinch or to switch things up, sure I'll be back, but not going out of my way to make a special trip if there is something closer.

Reviews for "The Wonders of BBQ in Monroe LA: An Unforgettable Adventure"

1. John Doe - 1 star: I had high expectations for Magical BBQ in Monroe, but unfortunately, it fell short in every aspect. The food was bland and lacked flavor, making it a disappointing dining experience. The service was slow, and the staff seemed uninterested in providing good customer service. The prices were also extremely high for the quality of food offered. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a satisfying BBQ experience.
2. Jane Smith - 2 stars: I visited Magical BBQ in Monroe with a group of friends, and we were all left underwhelmed by the food and service. The ribs were overcooked and tasted dry, while the pulled pork lacked any smoky flavor. The side dishes were average at best and did not complement the main dishes well. Moreover, the service was slow, and it took forever to get our orders. The only positive aspect was the ambiance, with a cozy interior, but that alone does not justify the disappointment we experienced. I would not return to Magical BBQ and cannot recommend it to others.
3. Robert Johnson - 2 stars: My recent visit to Magical BBQ in Monroe was quite disappointing. The ribs I ordered were overcooked and lacked tenderness, making them difficult to enjoy. The barbecue sauce was too sweet and overpowering, masking any potential flavors of the meat. The side dishes were nothing special either, with soggy coleslaw and bland beans. The service was average, but the overall experience did not live up to the hype I had heard about this place. I would suggest looking for other BBQ options in the area instead of settling for Magical BBQ.
