Emerald witch arc

Today is the day! I’ve just read all the published chapters up to date from the ‘Black Butler’ manga and I can really say that it really surprised me. My first contact with the anime was with the first season and I had mixed feelings about it (the part from the manga was very good but the fillers confused me a lot). Then, I watched ‘Book of Circus’ and I totally fell in love with the series and ‘Book of Murder’ encouraged me to read the manga. What I really like from ‘Black Butler’ is the big variety of characters, each one with their own level of complexity.

And that’s what I’m going to talk about. In spite of loving the Campania arc (OMG UNDERTAKER), there were some in the ‘Emerald Witch arc’ which I found interesting. The main one was Ciel’s internal conflict. While reading the manga I observed that even if we know so many things about the main character, we don’t really know about his true intentions. What I really like about Ciel is that he is not a ‘hero’ or a poor little boy that looks for revenge. Hell, from time to time he can show his dark side and scare the shit out of us.

I really liked this panels from this chapter of the ‘Emerald Witch arc’. It showed what we suspected: Ciel is not a innocent boy or a hero. He knows about his own darkness and his own sins. He’s a greedy person and will move for his own interest. However, this scene also discards the possibility that Ciel is a sociopath. A sociopath wouldn’t have this internal conflict about what he’d done in the past. What I really see is a severe case of PTSD, which is what caused this event.

(About Undertaker, shinigamis and more, under the cut…)

Another character that really surprised me from the Campania arc (I want to see it animated T-T *praying*) was Undertaker. In the previous ones it was treated like a mere side character or a comic relief but, as the story developed, we got to know more about him.

I’m really thrilled about the relationship between Vincent and the shinigami and the obscure goals of the experiments. Is he trying to bring him back from the dead? Then, why is he so important to him? Was he working fro Vincent? I really want to know more about these two intriguing characters. Even if we got to know that he can be kinda manipulative, I really feel for him. I suspect that he’s doing all of this because he’s feeling lonely (WAAAAH WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME, UNDERTAKER T-T).

Finally, I really found this panel very interesting. Now that we know their origins I would like to see more of their backstories. Some of the shinigamis are my favorite characters and I wonder why they’d commit suicide in the first place. Please Yana, I know that you like Grell as a comic relief, but I really want to see more of her and her human life. Same with William or Ronald, which are other characters I really enjoy. I know that having to write about so many characters is very difficult, but I have hope that someday they’ll have the arc they deserve. ^^

In conclusion, I’m enjoying the manga so far and it’s becoming one of my favorites. I’m looking forward for the next chapters. :)

黒執事 XXII [Kuroshitsuji XXII]

Yana Toboso (枢 やな Toboso Yana) is a female Japanese manga artist born in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan and currently resides in Yokohama. She is best known for Black Butler (黒執事 Kuroshitsuji), a popular shonen manga series.

She has also written yaoi under the pen name Yanao Rock (簗緒ろく).

Appearance
Yana Toboso draws herself as a devil with a black body and horns, a white head, and a pointed tail. She has never uploaded a picture of herself, so her actual appearance is unknown.

My first and only KS volume of the year

It is impossible NOT to love this volume. Since it was the characters vote for the 100 chapters, it is obvious Toboso-sensei let this influence her. And it made an awesome volume, I don't think any fan would be disappointed -entirely-.

What makes it a fabulous volume:

- That cover. I love Meyrin, specially since she is a badass character but also a comedy relief. She is not cute as Elizabeth, nor imposing as Lady Frances, but she is my favorite recurring female character in KS. At number #22, she finally gets her recognition.

- The end of the Emerald Witch arc, at least in Germany. This arc had it flaws but it ends satisfactorily. I confess I like the little girl, she is cute and sometimes very funny.

- Tanaka-san. The epitome of perfect -human- butler, when the Master is in danger! Of course, once the danger has passed, he goes back to "ho, ho, ho" XD

- The Shinigami Dispatch Society. We don't really get to know these two new Shinigami, Ludgar and Sacha, BUT. **rumbling drums** Grell and William are back! Just for fanservice though, but it was an incredible surprise that left me with a huge smile. And also, just one panel but still, Eric is shown crying while holding Alan's corpse. For any fan who has seen the musical, it is a bit nostalgic and a nice touch.

- Undertaker. He is in #3 in the character votes! (in my ranking, he is also #3, but instead of being behind Ciel, he is behind Grell ). His story with Dietrich and Vincent Phantomhive and another unknown guy, seems kinda like the Marauders. Vincent definitely was James Potter; and Undertaker seems like he is Sirius (looks like he loved Vincent the most, if we trust his tears).

- Ciel being a worrier. Kyaa, is Ciel getting, err, nicer? He asked Sebastian to save Wolfram (Sullivan's butler) and Sebastian himself tells him this, that he is worried for the girl. Of course, being Ciel he says this, and that, but we all know the truth: Ciel is getting nicer and seems like Sebastian is getting more human. It is all there in their conversations, like an innuendo but we fans know better!

- The Tutor. Back to England, Sebastian is in charge of making Sullivan a lady, to meet the Queen. That means manners at the table, good clothes, etc. I love sadistic tutor Sebas-chan. Not only he looks so handsome, but he is so. S. He never fails to make laugh with his methods.

- The dressmaker. Who we don't see since that unforgettable chapter where Ciel dressed in pink. She is such a fun, crazy character.

- The last and extra chapter, The Akuman 6, which doesn't really contribute anything to the story, but it was so much fun. They all look so polish (Grell and that outfit XD Undertaker and that hairstyle XD) and Viscount Druitt is such a fun.

Basically, all characters that are popular (including Lao, Agni, Soma, Snake, the Charles) are in this volume. Everything scream FANSERVICE! (including when Sebastian says to Ciel: If you disappear, I will be most distressed and worried. Because if my master is not here, I wouldn't be able to be your butler) but alas, since all characters are here, that means Elizabeth is also here. I still don't like her, and well, she is the reason I don't rate this 5* :(

How in the world are Vincent in #5 and Phillips in #6! How in the world isn't William in #5 and, I don't know, Viscount Druitt in #6! **shakes head**

Manga Review: Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)

There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to Black Butler. I picked up this series since I enjoyed the anime, and it was worth it!

To begin, let’s talk a little about canon manga material vs. the anime adaptation. The anime series uses canon material for the first half of the first season, the third season (Book of Circus), and the ovas Book of the Atlantic and Book of Murder. In season one, the story pivots after episode 6 or so into a different storyline (Regarding the missing girls and the puppeteer). This is not manga related. The second season is not canon in any form, and I thought it was terrible. I’ll be focusing mostly on canon material and the differences and similarities in the manga and anime (which both were very enjoyable, despite straying from original material.)

First of all, the manga begins as more of a comedy then anything else. It is very lighthearted and funny as you settle into the Phantomhive manor and get to know the main characters. As the story arcs continue the the show does get gradually darker as the overarching story begins to weave itself through. It seems unbalanced at times, with strange pacing, humor to darkness to humor again, they don’t lace together as well as I would have hoped.

In any event, its an easy read. Its interesting and fun and the art is great. As I always say for manga, I like clean lines and easy to understand panels, and this does not disappoint.

The story arcs run like so:

1. Black Butler Arc- Chapter 1 to 5

2 – Red Butler Arc- Chapter 6 to 14

3 – Indian Butler Arc- Chapter 15 to 23

4 – Circus Arc- Chapter 24 to 37

5 -Phanomhive Manor Murders Arc- Chapter 38 to 50

6 – Ship Voyage Arc- Chapter 51 to 66

7 – Public School Arc- Chapter 66 to 85

8 – Emerald Witch Arc- Chapter 86 to 107

9 – Blue Cult Arc- Chapter 108-present

Arcs 1- 6 are more or less covered in season one, season three, and the ‘Book of the Atlantic’ and ‘Book of Murder’ OVAs. The way that they divided up two important arcs and gave them their own movies was absolutely brilliant.

My favorite thing about the anime was fun characters randomly showing up together. You didn’t have to miss the servants, the reapers, or any of the other cast for too long, because they would always be back for one reason or another, popping up where unexpected. This was very enjoyable.

In the anime Grell, Sebastian and Ciel are what I would describe as “frienimies”, their actions and reactions to one another are always comical and it adds so much humor to the show. In the manga, Grell (and the reapers in general) are background characters and Grell, Ciel and Sebastian are primarily adversaries. I really missed the relationship between these three characters, as strange as it was.

A couple complaints about the anime: continuity errors, due to the overlapping canon/non-canon material. (People being suprised at a big reveal regarding a character when they had already been privy to this information, etc.) Also, let’s be honest. In the anime Ciel is really an asshole. He is rude to Sebastian, bossy, snotty, and doesn’t care about anyone around him. In the manga he and Sebastian have more comradery and he is never particularly rude or demanding. He does not carry an obsession about his parent’s murder, which is the theme of the anime, instead his main focus is always on his duties as the Queen’s guard dog, with the loss and past in the background.

The Emerald Witch arc was very good. The illustration, art and events were suspenseful and interesting, with the great art that would be excellent in anime form. The main, overarching story arc begins in the ‘Book of the Atlantic’ and continues throughout the upcoming chapters. Its interesting and continues to be more mysterious, dark and suspenseful.

As the manga carries on there are more lovable characters added.We see a lot more of Prince Soma, Snake, and Lizzy’s older brother, who becomes a heartwarming, recurring character. Finnian becomes one of my favorite characters, and the first thing I noticed about him was how his entire personality, skill set and overall attitude was exactly the same as Kenji in Bungo Stray Dogs. They have to be the same person. Or at least brothers? They even have the same hat!

Is the Manga worth reading? Absolutely. Its funny, it’s interesting, and if you liked the other animated material, pick it up- however begin at chapter one, since the anime vs manga can vary wildly at times.

In a disappointing turn of events, Black Butler just had its 15 year annerversery and it is still continuing in publication. It publishes an episode every month. Being that it seems to be nowhere near the end, not only with the main story but also this current story arc, I honestly don’t think it will ever be completed, and if it is, it will take a long LONG time. Even though it is far from finished, it is worth reading with some great visuals and events. This current arc isn’t particularly one of my favorite, it felt like it was a jerky, unexpected pivot and something that hadn’t been expected at the beginning of the series (no foreshadowing) so it kind of just came out of the blue. I’m sure it will all come together in the end, if I am alive long enough to see it come to an end.
