The LSU mascot is a tiger and it goes by the name "Mike the Tiger". The tradition of having a live tiger as the university's mascot started in 1936, when LSU first acquired a tiger cub. Over the years, there have been several tigers that have served as the official mascot for the university. Currently, the mascot is a live Bengal tiger named Mike VII. He was acquired by LSU in 2017 from a sanctuary in Florida. Mike VII lives in a habitat on the campus and is cared for by university staff.
