The Global Language of Memes: How They Transcend Barriers

By admin

The world of memes has become synonymous with the internet culture of today. Memes have the ability to entertain, connect and convey messages in a way that is simple yet impactful. One particular meme that has gained popularity over the years is the "It's Magic" meme. The "It's Magic" meme originated from a popular video clip featuring the magician David Blaine. In the video, Blaine performs a card trick, and when asked how he did it, he simply responds, "It's magic". This nonchalant and humorous response has been widely circulated and turned into a meme.

Zhang Yimou has internationally made a name for himself with his two epic dramas Hero and House of Flying Daggers. For his latest epic drama he gathered two old school stars, Chow Yun-fat and Gong Li. Curse of the Golden Flower is the story of Chinese Emperor Ping (Chow Yun-fat) and his Empress Phoenix (Gong Li) who try to eliminate each other through secrets and betrayal. Like in a game of chess one twist follows the other. The audience learns more about the backgrounds of the emperor, the empress and their three sons. One of the three sons comes from a past relationship of the emperor.

If you are expecting unbelievable fight scenes - which the exciting trailer kind of promises - you will be really disappointed. Zhang Yimou hasn't completely abandoned spectacular kung fu-scenes from Curse of the Golden Flower, but he doesn't pay as much attention to them as he did with his two previous martial art epics. To me the most interesting fight scene was hence the relatively short one in the beginning of the film which shows that the emperor's fighting skills are superior to the ones of his enemies.

Yimou focusses more on the characters. Especially Gong Li is given regular close-ups in which she has the opportunity to show her different affections. However, after a while this becomes rather boring.
However, I kept the real praise until the end. The abnormally detailed set design and costumes left me with a drooling mouth, especially the female costumes. The whole film is an absolute eye candy.

Curse of the Golden Flower is an interesting film that gives a bit of insight into the happenings of a Chinese palace 1000 years ago. It is far more of a drama with a tricky storyline and a great ending than a dramatic action film.

Curse of the golden flower subtitles

(aka "Curse of the Golden Flower" or "Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia" )

China 2006

In a world of decadence, with perfect palaces and perfect people, things are hardly ever perfect. The excesses are present but only to satisfy human desires. The maids are busty and gorgeous, the palace walls are adorned with gold, jewels and intricate carvings, the emperor, empress and their kids are flawless in appearance, but the palace is a microcosm for lies, treachery and hidden desires.

The movie follows the destruction of the imperial family in the Tang Dynasty. In this world, everybody has secrets, but everybody knows everything. The transparency of formality and normalcy has to override all the double-crossing and personal agendas. The odd thing is that nobody would ever know about these secrets because even if revealed they would never leave the palace walls. The movie takes place completely inside the palace walls, save for one small sequence, where the emperor decides to tie some loose ends. What do you do when you want to keep secrets that, when exposed, wouldn’t change anything? The outer layer is a lot more important than the inside.

The palace is tremendous and the costumes are breathtaking. Always known for the stunning cinematography in his films, director Zhang Yimou once again crafts a story through visuals. The framing is amazing and shows off the ridiculously ornate sets. The colours are a character of their own and combined with the work of director of photography Zhang Xiaoding (who previously worked with the director on ‘House of Flying Daggers’, with tremendous shots), the movie has great life and vibrancy. The beyond-vivid colours bring out the larger than life characters.

Gong Li teams up with the director for the first time since 1995’s ‘Shanghai Triad’ and she’s in fine form with the director. She gives a stunning and heartfelt performance. Chow Yun-fat is once again tremendous, and his charisma permeates every frame he’s in. Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou and Mainlander Liu Ye play the princes and give believable performances. The rest of the cast populates the movie, bringing this microcosm to life. The trials and tribulations of this family may not be normal, but they represent something much bigger.

Zhang Yimou directs a wonderfully visual movie. Though it will no doubt be marketed in the West as an action movie (artistically choreographed by Ching Siu-tung), the movie is essentially a drama. Taking out the action would not take any of the pertinence or entertainment value of the movie. The sumptuous sets and lavish production values cost a pretty penny, and the money definitely shows.

This is the third in Zhang Yimou’s action trilogy (which includes ‘Hero’ and ‘ House of Flying Daggers ’) and neither has the depth, meaning or action of the previous movies. It is, however a visual feast, an orgiastic experience akin to the lavish lifestyles of the royal family. Unfortunately with excess comes consequences and someone has to pay for the decadence and excess.

Reviews for "Memes and the Future: What Lies Ahead for Internet Culture"

1. John - 2 stars - I really did not enjoy "Its magicao meme". The humor seemed forced and juvenile, with most of the jokes consisting of cheap puns and memes that have been overused for years. The plot was also disjointed and hard to follow, and the characters lacked depth and development. Overall, I found the movie to be a waste of time and would not recommend it to others.
2. Sarah - 1 star - "Its magicao meme" was a complete disappointment for me. The comedy was cringeworthy and not funny at all. The jokes felt forced and desperate, and it seemed like the filmmakers were trying too hard to be hip and trendy with their use of memes. The plot was thin and uninteresting, and the characters were flat and unmemorable. I regret watching this movie and would advise others to steer clear of it.
3. Michael - 2 stars - I was excited to watch "Its magicao meme" but was left feeling underwhelmed. The humor was hit-or-miss, with some jokes making me chuckle while others fell completely flat. The storyline was weak and lacked originality, borrowing heavily from other comedic films. The acting was mediocre at best, and the overall execution of the movie felt rushed and poorly thought out. It's definitely not a film I would watch again or recommend to others.
4. Emily - 2 stars - "Its magicao meme" was a disappointment for me. The movie relied too heavily on internet culture and memes, which felt dated and forced. The jokes were predictable and lacked originality, and the plot was unengaging and lacked depth. Overall, I was expecting more from this movie, and I would not recommend it to others.
