In book #43 of the best-selling Magic Tree House series - Leprechaun In Late Winter - author Mary Pope Osborne writes about Jack and Annie, who are on another Merlin Mission. With help from their magical assistants Teddy and Kathleen, the two kids’ mission is to convince young artists – like Mozart and Louis Armstrong, for example - to use their talents to bring joy to the world. Now Annie and Jack travel to Ireland, year 1862, with just a magic whistle and instructions to convince an unhappy young girl that she has much to give to the cultural life of Ireland.

When the two time travelers climb down from their magic tree house, they find themselves knocking on the door of a Big House, where rich folks live lavishly compared to their poor Irish neighbors. This is where young Augusta is unhappy with her life, because she doesn’t want to be a wealthy lady. Instead, she wants to help the poor.

Jack and Annie use the magic whistle to give Augusta the power to see and speak with the magical, mystical, fairy creatures that are so much a part of Irish folklore and culture. These fairies lead Augusta to their Queen, who tells her that her mission is to find old storytellers and write down their Irish tales before they’re lost forever.

Augusta goes on to become Lady Augusta Gregory, co-founder of the Irish National Theatre.

But his desire for adventure and thirst for knowledge propelled him forward. With each step, the witch's presence grew stronger. As Jack stood before her door, he took a deep breath and knocked. To his surprise, the door creaked open, revealing a strikingly beautiful, yet ancient woman. The witch's eyes sparkled with hidden knowledge, and her voice carried an ancient wisdom. "Who dares disturb my solitude?" she asked, her voice a melodic mixture of curiosity and enchantment. Jack, somewhat hypnotized by her presence, boldly replied, "I am Jack, an explorer seeking the truth of your magical prowess and the tales that surround you." A faint smile formed on the witch's lips as she stepped aside, inviting Jack into her mystical abode. The walls adorned with potions, spellbooks, and relics of a forgotten time fascinated him. The witch began to weave tales of her ancient heritage, recounting legends and revealing secrets of her powers. Jack, engrossed in the witch's words, felt a strange connection growing between them. He found himself captivated by her tales, her presence, and her charm. However, the witch's power was not to be taken lightly, and she made it clear that every curiosity had its price. Intrigued by the unpredictable nature of their encounter, Jack hesitantly asked, "What does it take to truly know the extent of your magic?" The witch's eyes seemed to pierce his very soul as she answered, her voice enigmatic yet gentle, "To truly understand my magic, one must exchange a kiss with the otherworldly." Jack, torn between his fascination and trepidation, realized the magnitude of what she was asking. A million thoughts raced through his mind, but his curiosity got the best of him. So, with a mixture of fear and anticipation, he leaned in and exchanged a kiss with the witch. In that moment, a powerful surge of energy engulfed Jack, filling him with a profound sense of ancient wisdom and magic. It was as if the witch's knowledge and power flowed through him, leaving an indelible mark on his soul. As he pulled away, Jack felt forever changed. The witch smiled knowingly and bestowed upon him a final piece of advice: "Remember, knowledge is a gift, but magic comes with responsibility. Use it wisely." With newfound wisdom and a heart full of wonder, Jack left the witch's lair, forever transformed by the mystical exchange. The kiss with the witch became a symbol of his journey, a reminder of the power of curiosity, and the unpredictable nature of life's adventures..

"Exchanging a kiss with the witch" had the potential to be a captivating read, but it fell flat for me. The world-building was weak, leaving many questions unanswered and leaving me feeling disconnected from the story. The dialogue and interactions between characters felt awkward and stilted, making it difficult to become invested in their relationships. The ending also felt rushed and unsatisfying. Sadly, this book did not meet my expectations.
