Keyfinder FAQ

Q: Will it work for Windows 8 and Windows 7?

Q: I don't have product key. Will your program generate one for me?
Q: Why doesn't the product key returned match the one on my sticker?
Q: Does the Keyfinder contain any viruses, trojans, malware, or spyware?
Q: Can I retrieve the product key from a non-booting Windows installation?
Q: Why did the hive load fail?

Q: Will it work for Windows 8 and Windows 7?
Of course it will. Both Windows 7 and Windows 8 are supported as well as all previous Windows versions, including Windows XP, 2003 Server, 2000, NT, ME, 98 and 95.

Q: Can I retrieve the product key from the Windows CD?
No. Product keys are not stored on CDs themselves. When you enter your key while installing, it's checked against an algorithm to verify that the key is valid.

Q: I don't have product key. Will your program generate one for me?
No. The Keyfinder is not a key generator. It reads the registry and extracts the key that was used to install Windows.

Q: Why doesn't the product key returned match the one on my sticker?
If you purchased your PC with Windows already installed from a large manufacturer such as Dell or HP, it's likely that Windows was installed using an OEM key instead of the actual key for your PC. This saves them (and you) money because it's much more efficient for these large companies to install Windows once and then clone the drive.

Q: Does the Keyfinder contain any viruses, trojans, malware, or spyware?
No. I wrote this program for myself, and it just so happened that other people can use it as well. I absolutely loathe spyware, and I would never intentionally install it on anyone's PC. Some antivirus companies have began blocking their users from software that they consider grayware, and unfortunately the Keyfinder 1.x was included in that because (and I quote:) "Its information gathering capability can be used by a malicious user for malevolent purposes." Please see the Trendmicro write up about it.

Q: Can I retrieve the product key from a non-booting Windows installation?
As long as both Windows versions are 2000, XP, 2003, or Vista, you can use the Load Hive function. You will have to slave the drive and point the Keyfinder to the non-booting Windows directory.

Q: Why did the hive load fail?
1) Are both versions of Windows 2000, XP, 2003, or Vista?
2) Are you pointing it to the dead Windows directory? It will fail if you try to run it on your currently running Windows directory.
3) Are you running the Keyfinder with Administrator rights? Right click on the Keyfinder and click "Run As" and put in the administrator information.

it will always download the latest version from the project.

Well after consulting with legal sources, and an agreement between the DMCA claimer and myself/developers of EK. Basically we only have to rename the project unix name. That is the only drastic change.

I'll post here with the new project unix name when it becomes available. EK is not going away.

An open source project I currently develop is under attack with a DMCA violation. It is a baseless accusation because I'm still within my rights of the GNU GPL. Help me get the word out and post comments anywhere and everywhere.

This is not the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder. It is the Enchanted Keyfinder.

sag47: updated, thanks

'The "Options" and "Load Hive" menu options don't appear to work.'

"If the fork is portable we should either find the original application download and link its location for this listing, and consider listing the new fork, or consider replacing the original if the original is not maintained and the fork is portable."

When I forked this program I gave out the original GPL License sources from MJB because I had an extremely difficult time tracking them down.

I created the fork to further Keyfinder development.

The Enchanted Keyfinder Betas are more stable than the original keyfinder.2.0.8.zip.

Again MJB Keyfinder is the original program. Enchanted Keyfinder is the fork. MJB Keyfinder is no longer developed. I am developing EK. Please refer to this page for more information:

I would like to point out that the download link brings up the following message:"Enchanted Keyfinder is a Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder fork. This will be community driven development. The logos will also be changed to avoid confusing users with the original keyfinder software while still citing its roots. "

I have not tested this and have not taken the time to track down the original application.

If the fork is portable we should either find the original application download and link its location for this listing, and consider listing the new fork, or consider replacing the original if the original is not maintained and the fork is portable.

Some antiviruses call this a virus because it't often used for hacking keys and may avs don't like that especially AVG. I switched to Avira because of that.

Prefer ProduKey (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=544, which will allow users to change sources to a drive from a computer that crashed, or other Windows install. Although the product description says Magical will do this, my WinXP system wouldn't allow it.

The "Options" and "Load Hive" menu options don't appear to work.

The Magical program says it will change your Windows registration name, though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that. To change your windows password try "RockXP4" (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=462) even though its buggy.

The whole experience was a letdown, and I would not recommend wasting your time and money at this park.
