Do you believe in magic? Mia does. She understands that real magic comes from deep within a person. How is that possible? Well, she sees a new girl sitting all alone in the cafeteria and makes the effort to be friendly. Both Mia and the new girl feel sparkly with joy. The others sitting at Mia’s lunch table also feel the sparkly joy and they pass it on. When Mia is having trouble with math, a boy offers to help and they both feel sparkly with joy. And the new girl helps an elderly lady by holding the door for her. The magic pays it forward and everyone is feeling sparkly with joy. Yes, there is real magic and it comes from deep inside each of us.

Julie Cassetta’s picture book story, Magical Mia: Kindness is Contagious, is told in rhyming verse. With its eloquent lyricism, young readers will be singing along and perhaps adding their own suggestions of how to spread the magic. The plot develops with Mia’s sparkle about her magic secret, which is then shared in multiple ways and, in the end, everyone is helping someone else and spreading the magic of caring. The illustrations are beautiful and almost magical in themselves and certainly help carry the story along. This is a great way to introduce the notion of paying kindness forward – it really does have a charming magic all of its own. And, to top off the story, the author provides a list at the end of the book suggesting ways young readers can share the magic by being kind, caring, and helpful. Beautifully told.

Reviews for "The Science of Elmo: How the Sesame Street Mascot Helps Teach Kids Important Lessons"

1. Samantha - 1/5 stars - I was really disappointed with the Elmo mascot hegad. The costume looked cheap and tattered, and it definitely did not resemble the beloved character from Sesame Street. Plus, the person inside the costume did not seem to have any energy or enthusiasm, which made the whole experience lackluster. I would not recommend this for any children's event.
2. Michael - 2/5 stars - The Elmo mascot hegad was just okay. The costume was decent, but it was clear that it had seen better days. The person wearing the costume was friendly enough, but they seemed tired and not very engaged with the children at the event. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience, and I expected better given the price.
3. Jennifer - 2/5 stars - I was not impressed with the Elmo mascot hegad. The costume was definitely not up to par, and it looked worn out and dirty. The person inside the costume also lacked energy and didn't interact much with the kids. It was such a shame because Elmo is such a beloved character, and the kids were excited to see him, but this experience left a lot to be desired. I wouldn't recommend it based on my experience.
4. David - 1/5 stars - The Elmo mascot hegad was a complete disappointment. The costume was shabby and barely resembled Elmo. The person inside the costume also seemed disinterested and barely interacted with the children. It was a waste of money, and I wish I had booked a different character for our event. Stay away from this one!
