In his journey, Thomas learns about the hidden world behind mirrors, an alternate reality where dark creatures dwell.

Magical unicorn dessert shop in Dallas' Deep Ellum moves to bigger new digs

After an unprecedentedly robust debut in Deep Ellum, the unicorn-loving Magical Dessert Bar is moving to a new location.

The whimsical, fantastical dessert shop first opened at 2646 Elm St., next door to its ice cream-themed sibling Chills 360, in a small storefront that runs along the alley connecting Main and Elm Streets, almost as a whim.

Owner Javi Bubar said when they opened that their goal was to bring something new to Dallas. "We do a lot of travel and we saw a similar concept in Bangkok and thought it would well received in Dallas," she said.

Magical Dessert Bar featured desserts in unicorn colors, with unicorn cakes, milkshakes, boba tea, cupcakes, cake pops, and lemonades in different flavors like mango, pomegranate, and berry-berry, in decorative colors.

They soon learned that the appetite for unicorns is real. Real crazy. You only need to visit the shop's Facebook page to see the comments from eager fans, begging and pleading for shops in their own towns, fervently asking about hours, or flying in from Houston, Waco, and even New Mexico, just for a slice of colorful cake and the opportunity to pose in front of the unicorn mural painted on the wall and capture a special Instagram moment.

The appetite is so big that a second shop is slated to open in Houston, also in early March.

At 500 square feet and with no seating, the original shop in Deep Ellum quickly became overwhelmed by the mobs that descended, and they closed in early February.

"We had absolutely no seating, and with the summer coming and 100-plus degrees weather, we thought, 'How are customers going to wait and sit outside, especially with kids?'" Babar says. "So we decided to move now."

Their new spot is also in Deep Ellum, just a few blocks away, in a storefront at 3408 Main St.

"It's a 2500-square-foot space, which will give us the opportunity to create a more exciting product line and more interactive experiences," Babar says. "We are going to have the same menu as we had here plus more, because now we will have a huge seating space."

The new bigger space also gives them the option to host birthday parties and other private events, which have been a huge request item from customers.

Their target opening is mid March, possibly March 9 — the day the unicorns return.

White Rhino Coffee buzzes into cool Dallas suburb with newest shop

An expanding coffee chain is adding a cool new Dallas-area location to its pack: White Rhino Coffee will open in Garland on Friday, December 1, according to a release.

The new shop, at 5325 N. President George Bush Hwy., Ste. 200, will be the first in Garland and the 11th location for the concept, which was founded in 2007 in Cedar Hill.

White Rhino is known for craft coffee, pastries, and Southern bistro food such as maple-glazed chicken biscuits. Their drink menu includes drip coffee, espresso shots, cold brew, lattes, Americanos, cappuccinos, matcha lattes, chai, and more.

A December debut means a chance to introduce seasonal sips, too. A full holiday-time menu will feature Peppermint Mochas, Holiday Cookie Lattes, and Caramel Apple Ciders, plus snacks like Sticky Toffee Cake and German Chocolate Whoopie Pie, the release says.

Sampling of these treats and more will be offered during a special grand opening at the Garland store on December 1. It'll be a festive event: Santa will even be on hand to take photos and greet guests, from 11 am-3 pm.

The festive cheer won't stop there. To celebrate the new store opening, free holiday cookies will be offered at all White Rhino locations on December 1, while supplies last.

In addition to being known for high-quality coffee (from its own roastery), White Rhino touts its friendly service and welcoming atmosphere; each location is tailored to the neighborhood it serves.

The company also champions its charitable initiatives, which include donating more than $1 million annually to causes supporting children, the homeless, and the hungry in the communities in which it operates, they say.

“When we launched the first White Rhino 16 years ago, we never imagined we’d be welcoming our 11th location, but here we are and we couldn’t be more pleased to share our concept with Garland,” said company founder Chris Parvin in a statement. “Our goal is always to be good neighbors in each community we operate in, and we’re looking forward to providing a hospitable spot for people to eat, drink and gather.”

It's the latest opening in the suddenly cool Dallas suburb, which is attracting buzzy new restaurants, coffee shops, and more to its newly revitalized downtown area and beyond.

The new Garland White Rhino will be open daily, 6 am-7 pm.

Unicorn Dessert Bar Closed After Less Than Two Months in Austin

Downtown colorful sweets shop Unicorn Magical Dessert Bar has closed after less than two months. The Facebook page for the Austin shop has been taken down, the phone is disconnected, and the shop confirmed its closure in an Instagram message.

The Austin store opened at 511 East Sixth Street on Dirty Sixth on on Sunday, September 21. The location may have been problematic, as the area is not known for being family-friendly and the shop was two blocks from Easy Tiger (where talented baker David Norman makes all the goodies).

The dessert bar is actually not a bakery, as it outsources baked goods from other (unnamed) places, but offered a colorful space made for Instagram photos.

Unicorn Magical Dessert Bar first opened in Dallas, where it encountered a number of problems including a mold-filled cake pop, massive lines with no seating, dismal reviews, and other issues.

A second location of Unicorn opened in Houston in February of this year, while that Dallas location closed in April ostensibly to expand, though it doesn’t seem like that happened. An expansion to Santa Monica also never materialized.

Update, November 25: This article has been updated to reflect that Unicorn has closed.

Magical Unicorn Dessert Bar in Houston – A Unicorn Wonderland

Magical Unicorn Dessert Bar is filled with pink and pastel-colored decor. Stuffed unicorns are hanging from the ceiling and there are unicorn figurines on the counter. Everything in this dessert bar is “instagrammable”. This place is just not about the desserts, it’s about the experience. I must say I don’t like everything about the decor of the place; the plastic chairs seem a bit cheap, and the neon lights don’t look very nice to me. But I do love the pastel colors and unicorns!

Rainbow Cakes, Pink Hot Chocolate, and Unicorn Donuts

Everything about the Magical Unicorn Dessert Bar is related to unicorns, so all the desserts are pink, cute, and pastel-colored. They have unicorn donuts, unicorn cupcakes, pink hot chocolate, and rainbow cakes. Everything is filled with sugar and sweet colors.
