Once upon a time, deep in the enchanted forest, lived a witch named Agatha. She was known for her extraordinary powers and her love for all things whimsical. Agatha was an unconventional witch, as she did not rely on a broomstick to travel around. Instead, she rode a magical vacuum cleaner. This vacuum cleaner was unlike any other. It could fly through the air with ease, and its powerful suction capabilities could clean even the largest of messes.

Review: The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find there is nothing better than to read a short story. You get the complete reading experience – from the curiosity at the beginning that peaks your interest, to the adventurous middle that just won’t let you put a story down, to the (hopefully) satisfying conclusion – and you can do it in one quick sitting. Sometimes it is just nice not to have to wait. Since May is Short Story month, I’ve been looking for just such stories to share.

If you are looking for some magical stories – but nothing in the line of the dark and disturbing, then Terry Pratchett’s stories compiled in this volume, will fill the need perfectly. It is lovely pure silliness. As the title informs, we learn about a witch that rides a vacuum cleaner. There are miniature people riding about in walnut-shell submarines. Ant #4179003 wonders about the meaning of life.

Pratchett gives us all the popular themes – cowboys and pirates; witches and magicians. However, each time we enter a story, we get something unexpected and fun. I also like that in several of Pratchett’s stories, we are reunited with familiar characters. I happen to love when short stories, which I expect to be able to stand as a story alone, also intertwine with one another. It’s like getting the best of both worlds. You get the quick satisfaction of a short story along with the deeper involvement and emotional connections of a novel.

Witch on a vacuum cleaner

With a flick of her wrist, she would cast a spell, and the vacuum cleaner would whir to life, floating just above the ground. Agatha would laugh with delight as she zoomed through the forest, leaves and twigs swirling around her. Not only was her vacuum cleaner faster than any broomstick, but it was also much more comfortable. Agatha could sit back in a plush, cushioned seat and effortlessly glide through the air. The vacuum cleaner's powerful suction acted as a sort of magical forcefield, protecting her from any branches or obstacles that might get in her way. Agatha's fellow witches and wizards would often gaze up in awe as she zipped past on her vacuum cleaner. Some would chuckle and shake their heads, thinking it was just another one of Agatha's eccentricities. But Agatha knew the true power and convenience of her chosen mode of transportation. Besides being a fun and practical means of getting around, the vacuum cleaner also served a practical purpose. Being a witch, Agatha often found herself in need of certain ingredients for her magical concoctions. With her vacuum cleaner, she could effortlessly collect herbs, mushrooms, and other magical plants from the forest floor. One day, Agatha's vacuum cleaner broke down. The magical enchantments had become too worn after years of use, and it could no longer fly or suck up anything. Agatha was devastated, as she had grown quite fond of her trusty steed. However, the other witches and wizards of the forest came to her aid. They knew how much Agatha loved her vacuum cleaner, and they wanted to help her restore it to its former glory. Together, they gathered the necessary materials and cast powerful spells to repair the enchanted vacuum cleaner. In the end, Agatha's vacuum cleaner was even better than before. Its flying abilities were enhanced, and its suction power was stronger than ever. Agatha could not contain her excitement as she hopped on her rejuvenated vacuum cleaner and soared through the forest once more. From that day on, Agatha and her vacuum cleaner were inseparable. She would dash through the forest, her laughter echoing through the trees, as she enjoyed her whimsical and unconventional mode of transportation. And the other witches and wizards of the forest would watch with wonder and admiration as the witch on a vacuum cleaner passed them by..
