TWO GAMES FOR WEEK TWO – El Paso Locomotive face a quick and challenging turnaround in Week 2. First, El Paso welcome Colorado Springs Switchbacks to Southwest University Park on Wednesday, March 15. Following that, Locomotive close out the March Homestand on Saturday, March 18 against Detroit City FC, who will make their first ever trip to El Paso.
LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK – Following Saturday’s loss, El Paso will be looking for a positive result against Colorado Springs. Unlike the Switchbacks – who open their 2023 campaign in El Paso -, Locomotive have had an opportunity to see its squad play in official competition. Head Coach and Technical Director Brian Clarhaut will fine-tune pieces in the squad to ensure Locomotive not only continue to maintain control of the match (as it did against Sacramento) but also capitalize on scoring opportunities in the box.
LUCHO & PETAR – After being left out of the 18-man roster for Saturday’s season opener as a precaution, it’s likely that Luis “Lucho” Solignac and Petar Petrovic make an appearance for one of, or both, games in Week 2.
Lucho is clinical in front of goal for Los Locos, finishing as the club’s top scorer the past two seasons. Petrovic lit up the offense during pre-season, dribbling through players to create scoring opportunities for the team and himself. Should El Paso repeat its pitch dominance from Saturday and couple that with possible appearances from Lucho and Petrovic, the Switchbacks defense could certainly face an uphill battle.
DEBUTANTS – Four players made their Locomotive debuts on Saturday: goalkeeper Benny Diaz (played full match), defender Marc Navarro (played 66’), defender Bence Pavkovics (played full match) and midfielder Denys Kostyshyn (played 85’). 2023 additions yet to make their debuts: Petar Petrovic, Erik McCue, Luis Moreno, Javier Garcia.
COLORADO SPRINGS SWITCHBACKS (8TH WESTERN CONFERENCE, 0-0-0, 0 PTS)
The Switchbacks open their 2023 campaign at Southwest University Park without starting midfielder Steven Echeverria (suspended one match for abusive language) and against a Locomotive side looking to bounce back following Saturday’s loss to Sacramento Republic.
Following the departure of Brendan Burke to Houston Dynamo FC of Major League Soccer, Stephen Hogan has stepped in his place to serve as the club’s General Manager & Head Coach, having previously served as Technical Director & Assistant Coach the past two seasons. Hogan had a busy offseason replacing key players who led the Switchbacks to third place in the 2022 regular season and a Western Conference Final appearance, where they lost to eventual Western Conference and USL Championship winners San Antonio FC.
Notable players who joined the squad include former All-League selections James Musa, Devon ‘‘Speedy’’ Williams and Romario Williams. Notable departures include the 2022 USL Championship Young Player of the Year Michee Ngalina (2022 – 14 goals, 9 assists), 2021 USL Championship MVP Hadji Barry (2022 – 16 goals, 9 assists) and 2022 All-League Second Team selection Cameron Lindley (2022 – 9 assists).
