According to local experts, the ethereal glow can be traced back to a higher-than-usual concentration of light-emitting organisms in the water.
Steve Haddock, a bioluminescence specialist at the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, told local TV station KSBW that he suspects a certain type of phytoplankton, microscopic organisms that float near the surface of the ocean and serve as food for a wide range of sea animals, are responsible for the spectacle. "It is almost certainly a dinoflagellate bloom. We are also seeing relative high bioluminescence with our instruments here in Monterey Bay," he said. "The species counts from the Santa Cruz area show low to moderate numbers of the 'usual suspects' of luminous species that we would expect to cause such a bloom: Noctiluca, Lingulodinium, and Protoperidinium being some of the brightest."
