Great Wolf Lodge Magic Wands
Not sure if anyone here has been to or heard of Great Wolf Lodge. It’s a chain of water parks and one of the attractions is this “quest” throughout the hotel. You buy and customize a wand and go throughout the hotel to the many stations and flick the wand towards the station which activates something. Kids love it, but the downside is the wands only work at the lodge and even though you can take them home, they’re basically tiny and poorly made walking sticks.
Well the “magic” behind the wand is that each has an IR transmitter which presumably deploys a unique frequency and is activated by an accelerometer. So to bring some magic home with us, I wanted to get this working at home.
I bought a FLIRC USB dongle. It’s a pretty cool device. You can plug it into a computer and use the application to program a virtual keyboard with whatever IR signals you want. That information is saved on the device which you can then plug in to any other computer and have it act as a keyboard such that the particular IR signal will cause the preprogrammed key press.
I set it up on my raspberry pi HASSIO using the keyboard integration. Took some figuring out to set up but this configuration seemed to work:
keyboard_remote: - device_name: 'flirc.tv flirc Keyboard' type: 'key_down'
Then you can use ‘keyboard_remote_command_received’ to figure out what key corresponds to which wand.
After that it is trivial to have any wand control anything your home assistant box can control.
