I have the expensive Fender "correct" knobs but they were made for a 1965 American Jazzmaster and I have a new Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster.
It doesn t cause the knob to go all the way flush with the guitar body of course but it does support the bottom on the knob so that everything turns smoothly. I wouldn t expect much knob material to drill into, injection molding these kinds of parts to avoid sinks and blemishes requires keeping all the wall thicknesses uniform -- so whatever the thickness of the side flanges are, that is probably all you have at the top of the knob before you drill through.
