No Phones Allowed: Brand Building Through Tech-Free Experiences

In a world where technology seems to be the driving force behind every customer experience, a growing branch of the experience economy is doing something radical: banning cell phones.

The businesses of building memorable events is booming, and unique selfie opportunities are often part of the package. Technology-free experiences buck the trend that brands don’t seem to exist if they aren’t constantly shared on social media—which could be a risky move, but customers feel they have experienced something unique and exclusive.

Instead of sharing with the masses, they share the experience via word of mouth, which grows the brand. The move towards tech-free experiences may seem unorthodox, but it resonates with a growing number of customers.

In many ways, The Magic Castle, an exclusive old entertainment club tucked in the Hollywood Hills, looks like it was made for Instagram. Guests adhere to a strict formal dress code, and every corner of the 1962 mansion is full of historical photographs and accessories. But you won’t find photos of guests’ visits shared online—The Magic Castle doesn’t allow photography and encourages guests to keep their phones in their pockets.

The rule allows guests to truly be immersed in the intricate design, history and magic. Without the distraction of taking the perfect photo, guests become totally engaged in the unique experience. The Magic Castle doesn’t rely on technology to create an amazing experience. Instead, it’s all in the details. Every aspect of the design and experience transports guests into another world, even down to entering the club through a hidden bookcase with the words “Open Sesame.”

And the no photography rule isn’t just for fun—anyone caught taking photos has to delete them and is immediately removed from the premises and not invited back.

Other events and clubs are following suit and banning photos and cell phones, to the delight of their loyal and growing followings. One example is Soho House, which can only be entered by members or guests of a member, adding to the intrigue and the sense of stepping into another world.

London-based Secret Cinema turns movies into theatrical productions as guests dress up and play important roles as they step into the world of their favorite movies. Even the location is secret. And to add to the immersive experience, phones must be locked or left at home.

Popular performers and musicians are joining the movement, with big names like Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys and Amy Schumer banning taking photos or videos during their shows. They often go so far as to stop the show if they see someone using their phone. The reason behind the controversial decision? They want concertgoers to experience the event in person, not through a screen.

In a world where brands don’t seem to exist if they aren’t constantly shared on social media, technology-free experiences buck the trend. It could be a risky move, but customers feel they have experienced something unique and exclusive. Instead of sharing with the masses, they share the experience via word of mouth, which grows the brand.

The devices that are meant to keep us connected can often get in the way of fostering true connection. The internet is full of research about the benefits of unplugging—including better mental health, stronger relationships, better sleep and more focus.

Even with all those benefits, it can seem counterintuitive to attend an exclusive event and not share it online or even take a photo to remember it. But brands are showing that tech-free immersive experiences are not only possible but in incredibly high demand.

The experience economy is just that—an experience. Consumers increasingly want to escape real life and enter a new world of fantasy and magic. And if that requires leaving their phones and technology behind, people are on board.

The Magic Castle

The Magic Castle in Hollywood is a private, members-only club dedicated to all things magic. To enter, you must be a member of the Academy of Magical Arts or a guest of a member. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, there will be an event that’s open to the public and you may be granted an RSVP.

I’ve seen this gorgeous Victorian driving by a thousand times on Franklin Ave. And I had heard all the amazing things that go on in there, yet I didn’t have any magicians in my social circle that could conjure an invite for me. As I was looking through my sources for events in LA for the week, I stumbled upon a charity event that was taking place in the castle the following evening. This was my chance!

A History of the Magic Castle

The property was built in 1909 by a Mr. Rollin B. Lane, a real estate mogul who used to own most of Hollywood. It officially became the Magic Castle in 1963 and the official clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts.

If you have the pleasure of getting in as a magician, guest, or attending an event, there is a strict dress code that everyone is required to follow. Ladies are expected to be in formal wear and the men are required to wear a dinner jacket at all times, as well as a tie or bow tie. This provides an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. Also, no pictures are allowed past the lobby; hence, why I don’t have too many pictures for you!

Inside the Magic Castle

Inside the castle, there is a lobby where you are checked in. There’s a gift shop to the right with various souvenirs. In front and to the left of you, you will see bookcases and one that is a secret door that opens to the words, “Open Sesame.” This leads you to another room with a bar, a tiny theater to the right, and a staircase that leads to the main dining room. Since I came as a guest to the event, I was not able to have dinner there but I definitely want to come back. The menu looks delicious.

To get to the other parts of the castle, you go through the dining room back down the stairs where there is another bar and the Palace where the main magic acts happen. It fills up really fast and has a lineup of three magicians. Further down this way, you can find the Prestidigitation theater which is medium-sized and also hosts magic shows. Past this room, is the basement that they reserve for private events and shows.

Before attending any shows, I tried out this amazing peach whiskey cocktail and this fruity strawberry drink. I liked the peach one the best. The first show I saw was a Slight of Hand act. It was an assortment of tricks featuring a handkerchief, deck of cards, cup and balls, and safety pins. I watched another magician, a Brit guy, do a variety act featuring cards, scarves and whole bunch of tricks.

Overall, it was a fantastic evening full of fun and magic. If you’re looking to get into the Magic Castle, follow my Twitter and connect with me on Instagram and Facebook to learn about upcoming events that will be open to the public. It might be your only way in!

Have you been to the Magic Castle? How was your experience there? If you have not been there, are you interested in going someday?

Appearing At The Magic Castle

Austin magician Brad Henderson to appear at Hollywood’s world-famous Magic Castle.

The Magic Castle is a Los Angeles landmark. Situated in the Hollywood Hills behind the famous Mann’s/Grauman’s Chinese Theater, The Magic Castle is one of the world’s most exclusive private clubs. Not only is there a strict dress code, and I mean strict (coats and ties for men, evening attire for women), admission is also granted only by personal invitation.

The Magic Castle is a club for magicians. Founded in 1963 by Bill and Milt Larsen, The Castle, as it is called by members, is often referred to as the Mecca of magic. Not only have dedicated magicians from all over the world packed up their lives and relocated to be nearer the legends who have made the Castle their home, the club hosts some of the greatest magicians in the world, nightly, on the Castle’s many stages.

The Palace of Mystery, the largest stage, features larger scale acts like illusionists and stage manipulators. Here one might see a comedic take on the famous sawing a lady in half, or witness in awe as a floating lady vanishes over your head. And yes, it’s almost always a lady; magic is an ancient art, and these things take time.

The Parlour of Prestidigitation is a medium sized theater home to modern interpretations of magic similar to those one may have witnessed in the Victorian drawing rooms of a by gone age. Sleight-of-hand, comedy, and audience participation can usually be found in the shows featured here, but the jewel in the Castle’s crown is The Close-Up Gallery.

The Close-Up Gallery is the most intimate performance space in the Castle. Sitting less than two dozen individuals, the magic is occurring, literally, right in front of your eyes. It is, in some ways, the most revered performance space in the castle, as it is the oldest of all of the theaters. Some of magic’s most talented and respected performers have sat behind that iconic green table. It is an honor to be asked to perform in any capacity at the castle, and it is always an exciting and daunting privilege to be asked to headline the close-up room.

I am excited to announce that I will be the featured performer in the esteemed Close-Up Gallery at the legendary Magic Castle in Hollywood, California for the week of April 4th-10th.

If you are going to be in Los Angeles during that time, drop me a line and I will make sure you get a guest pass that will allow you to have dinner and see the shows, including mine.

If you would like to see the show but are not going to be in Hollywood, you have two options:

I will be presenting the show at a local venue sometime prior to departing. Follow me on Facebook for details as they become available, or bring me to your house or office for a private showing at an exclusive pre-departure rate. Get in touch fo r a perfect evening of magic for you and your friends.

Reviews for "The Excitement of Deep Sea Fishing Adventures"

1. Emily - 1 star
I was extremely disappointed with "Reel magic fishing news". The articles were poorly written and lacked any substantial information. It felt like I was reading a bunch of random tidbits rather than actual news. The layout of the magazine was also a mess, making it difficult to navigate and find what I was looking for. Overall, I found this publication to be a waste of both my time and money.
2. John - 2 stars
I have been an avid fishing enthusiast for years, and I was excited to read "Reel magic fishing news" to stay updated on the latest trends and techniques. However, I found the content to be quite repetitive and mundane. The articles did not offer any new insights or tips, and it felt like I was reading the same information over and over again. I was hoping for more in-depth features and interviews with experienced anglers, but the magazine was lacking in that aspect. I won't be subscribing to this publication again.
3. Sarah - 1 star
As someone who is new to fishing, I was hoping that "Reel magic fishing news" would provide me with helpful guidance and beginner-friendly tips. Unfortunately, this magazine did not meet my expectations at all. The articles were overly technical and assumed a high level of knowledge and experience. I found myself lost and frustrated while reading, as I couldn't understand half of what was being discussed. This publication is certainly not suitable for beginners, and I would not recommend it to anyone looking to learn about fishing.
4. Michael - 2 stars
I was hoping to find some entertaining fishing stories and anecdotes in "Reel magic fishing news". However, I was left disappointed as the content lacked any real charm or humor. The writing style was dry and monotonous, making it difficult to stay engaged. It felt more like reading a textbook than a magazine. If you are looking for an enjoyable read about fishing, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
