spelling of Neve - opinions please.

We have decided we love the name Neve but can't agree on how too spell it. I like the traditional irish way niamh but the OH thinks its too confusing and she'll have to spell her name out all the time. what do you think?

Reply See last answer Anonymous 19/03/2012 at 9:00 pm

i will point out that i am irish so to me only the spelling niamh makes sense to me. i would pronounce neve as nev and i haven't seen the other spelling of it used before.

personally if i were using a name from another culture or language then i would stick with the appropriate spelling.

my middle daughter is called Neve and we deliberated for aaaages over the exact same thing as you. In the end i am glad we went with 'Neve'. although some people have mispronounced it ('neve-y' and 'nev') most people get it right. i think its a beautiful name- good luck. )

I prefer Neve as in Neve Campbell (actress).

Taught a girl called Niamph and when i saw it written i had no clue as how to pronounce it!!

and. having a funny spelling in my name and ALWAYS having to tell people how to spell it is really annoying! Even the dr surgery can never find me on the books and i have to supply my date of birth in order for them to locate my forms.

Neve, Nieve or Niamh?

Niamh in not really a fan spelling names untraditionally.

Neve and Niamh aren't really the same, Neve is pronounced Neev but Niamh is more like a soft Nee-uv, if that makes sense. Have never seen Nieve, so it just looks like sieve with an N to me

Bookmark PositivelyPERF · 29/08/2018 00:07

Niamh Is the nicest and ‘looks’ more interesting when written down, iykwim

Bookmark dinosaurkisses · 29/08/2018 00:10

It’s become such a popular name in the UK there’s no need to bastardise the spelling.

Bookmark Neweternal · 29/08/2018 00:12

Foggy I believe they are the same, like Sean is not like pronounced Seen, Shawn is for people who aren't interested in the Irish Gaelic spelling. I have came across a shovonne instead of a siobhan. Personally if your going to go the Irish thing embracing the spelling is classier. But your child your decision!

Bookmark NiamhNaomh · 29/08/2018 00:12

I know both the Nia uvs down south (Ireland- Cork/Kerry) and the Neevs future North of Munster both spelt Niamh.

Bookmark orangeunicorn · 29/08/2018 00:13

Niamh is my favourite spelling too, but DH says if we were to spell it this way we would be setting her up for a life time of constantly correcting and telling people how to pronounce it he likes the 'Neve' spelling.

I didn't know they were pronounced differently pp!

Sean is not pronounced Seen because in Irish there's a fada on the a, Seán, making it an Aw sound.

Bookmark DramaAlpaca · 29/08/2018 00:15

What Foggymist said ^^

Niamh & Neve are different names, pronounced differently.

Nieve is Spanish & means 'snow'.

Bookmark orangeunicorn · 29/08/2018 00:15

I thought it would be popular enough for people to just know how to pronounce it. DH doesn't think so!

Honestly didn't know they were different names! Learn something new everyday

Spell it correctly - other than as pp have pointed out - if you want it to be pronounced Neve (in England) then the correct spelling is Niamh.

Bookmark NiamhNaomh · 29/08/2018 00:19

Are you pronouncing Neve as per Neve Campbell or N ‘eve’?

Otherwise to me Niamh and N’eve’ are pronounced the exact same where I live in midlands Ireland, not so for my friend Niamh from Cork who is Nia uv (or úbh as in egg if I was to give it her full title)

Bookmark Foggymist · 29/08/2018 00:22

Oh yes actually Neve Campbell is pronounced Nev, not Neev (and Nev from Catfish is Neev just to complicate things!).

I'm also in Midlands Ireland but am from Cork/Kerry so I guess I hear Nee-uv up here even if they say Neev!

Bookmark orangeunicorn · 29/08/2018 00:23

I'd pronounce them all 'N ee V ", I'm from Leeds and I think that is how we would all pronounce them here. That's what my I thought they were the same name

I have a friend with a preteen called Neve. She, and everyone else, pronounce it the same as Niamh.

Anyway, preferred spelling:
Niamh
Neve

Don’t like Nieve.

Bookmark villainousbroodmare · 29/08/2018 00:29

Niamh. It has two syllables as PPs have said.

Bookmark gimeallthecake · 29/08/2018 00:38

Yeah I'm from Cork and we pronounce Niamh, Nia úibh (knee-iv)

I'd go with the original Irish spelling. But that's because I'm Irish and love Irish names. My three kids all have Irish names and we don't live in Ireland but it always leads to lovely conversations about the spelling, meaning and origin of the name.

Bookmark Piebeansandchips · 29/08/2018 00:41

I know 5 little ones called Nieve round my way and one spelt Niamh.

Bookmark Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 29/08/2018 00:46

Just spell it Niamh if you want people to “ just know how to pronounce it”

Bookmark RavenWings · 29/08/2018 00:50

Neve and Niamh aren't really the same, Neve is pronounced Neev but Niamh is more like a soft Nee-uv, if that makes sense.

Definitely not so in my part of Ireland. Niamh is Neev, that's the correct way here. But at the same time I think someone used to being called Neev will answer to Nee Uv.

I agree that for the Irish name Niamh looks classier and much better written down.

Name help-- Niamh or Neve (or some other spelling)??

Hubby and I are having a little girl in July. We have decided on a name. but not the spelling.

The name is a traditional Irish name, which is very well-known in Ireland, and also pretty known in England. It is gaining some popularity in Australia as well. Problem is, it is pretty much unknown in the US, and the traditional Irish spelling is confusing, to say the least.

The name is pronounced "Neeve", like "Eve" with an "N". The true spelling, and the way it is spelled in Ireland, is Niamh (in Gaelic, the "i" gives an "e" sound and the "amh" is a "v").

An anglicized version used in the UK is Neve, however, in Ireland and the UK, Neve is seen as a trashy/uneducated misspelling.

Personally, I am not a big fan of creatively spelled or misspelled names here in the US-- for example, trading an "i" for a "y" at the end of a name to make it seem more modern. So, I lean toward the traditional spelling, Niamh.

However, I know that very few people in the US will be able to pronounce or spell Niamh-- so do we go with Neve? The problem with Neve is that Neve Campbell messed that one up-- since she pronounces her name Nev (hers is actually Scandinavian and a totally different name than Niamh/Neve).

What do you think? Niamh or Neve? Is Niamh too weird? Is Neve a lazy way out?

Also-- Nia is a traditional nickname for Niamh (yes, pronounced "Nee-a" even though Niamh is not pronounced that way), which wouldn't really work for Neve.

The full name will be Niamh/Neve Marie Flieger (our last name is pronounced Flee-ger, with a hard G). Both hubby and I have Irish ancestry.

Thank you for any input!!

Reviews for "Mimi Magicw Abd: An Unauthorized Biography of the Illusionist Extraordinaire"

1. Sarah - 2 stars - I didn't enjoy "Mimi magicw abd" at all. The characters felt flat, and the storyline was confusing. There were too many plot holes and inconsistencies that made it difficult for me to stay engaged. Additionally, the dialogue felt forced and unnatural. Overall, I found this book to be a disappointment and wouldn't recommend it.
2. John - 1 star - "Mimi magicw abd" was a complete waste of time for me. The writing was unpolished and full of grammatical errors. The plot was nonsensical and lacked depth. The characters were poorly developed, making it hard to connect with any of them. I felt like I was reading a rough draft rather than a finished novel. I definitely won't be picking up any books by this author again.
3. Emily - 2 stars - I had high hopes for "Mimi magicw abd" based on the synopsis, but it fell short of my expectations. The pacing was incredibly slow, and the story dragged on without any significant developments. The protagonist was uninteresting and lacked motivation, which made it difficult to care about her journey. The world-building was also underdeveloped, leaving me confused about the rules and dynamics of the magical world. Overall, I was disappointed by this book and wouldn't recommend it to others.
